Why I love this craft
There’s so many ways you can customize this craft, and you simply start by putting a cutting board and unfinished wood crate. I’ve made several of these crafts for different seasons and holidays, so I knew making one for Christmas was a must.
Should I get a Cricut machine?
For this particular craft project, I used my Cricut machine to make the decal you see on the cutting board. Although you can use other decals or self-adhesive stickers, I enjoy making my own decals on my Cricut to get exactly what I want.
But, I know not everyone has access to a Cricut. In that case, rub-on transfers, paint, or mod-podging a printed image are all great options!
The inspiration for this craft:
As I mentioned before, I’ve made several crafts using the cutting board and crate method:

Dollar Store Mini Tree Farm Craft
Grab a pack of mini bottle brush Christmas trees, a bamboo cutting board, and a mini wood crate to make a festive Dollar Store Mini Tree Farm Craft.
Materials
- bottle brush Christmas trees, 2 packs (Dollar Tree)
- mini unfinished wooden crate (Dollar Tree)
- bamboo cutting board (Dollar Tree)
- Folkart matte acrylic paint (colors: coffee bean and parchment)
- wood glue
- hot glue
- styrofoam squares
- farm fresh Christmas trees decal (using a Cricut)
- scrap burlap pieces
- black and white check ribbon
Tools
- 1" flat paint brush
Instructions
- Watch the video. Follow along with the video tutorial for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to make your own mini tree farm craft.
- Layered technique. Start by applying a dry-brush layer of brown paint on the cutting board (including the sides).
Repeat the same for the mini wood crate. Then, layer in some cream-colored paint (I used the color parchment). - Attach the crate to cutting board. Use a small paint brush to add some wood glue to the back of the crate along with a few dabs of hot glue for extra hold.
- Add craft foam. Secure small craft foam squares inside of the crate using a few dabs of hot glue.
- Apply the decal. Transfer the decal onto the top of the cutting board, ensuring you leave enough room for the bottle brush trees to show.
- FIll the crate. Start by covering the craft foam with small pieces of scrap burlap. Then, press the bottle brush trees right into the craft foam.
- Embellish the crate. Finish the look by attaching black and white buffalo check ribbon with hot glue. Create a small bow to attach in the center.
