Why I love this craft

Drop cloth is a material I’ve learned to keep on hand because there are so many things you can do with it. Over the years, I’ve made everything from Sharpie-decorated pillow covers to Christmas tree wall hangings.

For this craft, it was the perfect choice for easily making a pouch that could be embellished and filled with fall-like decor.

Is drop cloth easy to work with?

The feasibility of this material is one of the reasons why I like using it for craft projects. It’s easy to paint, embellish, fray the ends for a decorative look, and hold hot glue well.

It’s also one of those materials that gives you a lot of bang for your buck. I always suggest buying a quite a bit to keep on hand versus buying it as needed.

The inspiration for this craft:

I’ve made my fair share of decorative bags to bring out the look of a certain season, but I had not experimented with using drop cloth to make a bag. Some of the others bags I’ve made used brown paper bags, newspaper, or scrapbook paper – but this time, we’re using drop cloth!

If you're looking for a unique craft project to add to your autumn decor, you'll love this Fall Grain Sack Pouch!

Materials

  • a piece of drop cloth fabric (12"x11")
  • painter's tape
  • Waverly chalk paint (color: moss)
  • (2) half wood balls
  • 6 pieces of twine
  • (optional) rub on transfers (Dollar Tree)
  • shredded paper stuffing
  • faux fall flower bouquet

Tools

  • hot glue gun
  • pouncer brush
  • small paint brush

Instructions

  1. Watch the tutorial video. Follow along with the video for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to create your own fall grain sack pouch.
  2. Prep the drop cloth. Apply a line of glue about a quarter of an inch inside the edge of the top of cloth and fold it over to create a decorative edge. Apply another line of hot glue on the folded edge and fold it down about halfway down the cloth (watch the video to see how I did this).
  3. Create the "pouch." Flip the drop cloth over and fold it into thirds. Secure it with hot glue. Seal the bottom by applying hot glue and pinching the bottom together. (Side note: it's easier to glue the corners by sticking your hand inside of the pouch and pinching the triangular corners together once you've applied a dab of hot glue.)
  4. Prep the pouch for painting. Apply strips of painters tape vertically onto the cloth in the pattern shown in the video.
  5. Paint the pouch. Use a pouncer brush to paint the bag. (Use a dry brush to get even coverage.) Carefully peel away the tape.
  6. Paint the half wood balls. Paint the balls in the same color used on the bag.
  7. Make the hanger. Use 6 pieces of twine to create a braid. (Make a knot on one end and use painters tape to keep it in place while you braid.)
  8. Finish assembling the pouch. Glue a half wood ball in each corner of the pouch. Cut the ends of the braided twine and hot glue them inside of the pouch (watch the video to see how I did this).
  9. Optional embellishment. Add rub on transfers to decorate the pouch.
  10. Decorate. Add shredded paper stuffing into the bottom of the bag and finish up with a faux fall flower bouquet.
