Why I love this craft

I saw this viral trend on Instagram, so I had to give it a try. And if you’ve spent any amount of time on my blog or YouTube Channel, then you know how much I enjoy book crafts. Needless to say, I’m obsessed with how this turned out and I already have an idea for a Christmas-themed one.

Best place to buy books to use for crafting?

I always suggest picking up books at Dollar Tree. You can find all shapes, sizes, colors, and the like. For this craft project, I went with a brighter colored book (which is outside the norm for me), but it turned out great. The bright colored book was also a great contrast for the faux greenery, berries, and leaves that I used to embellish it with.

The inspiration for this craft:

As I mentioned before, I saw this trend on Instagram; however, I have made TONS of book crafts in the past. One of my favorites are fabric covered books. Now instead of just covering books, I have a new way of using them!

Materials

  • book
  • faux greenery
  • faux leavels
  • faux berries
  • ribbon (natural and burlap)
  • twine

Tools

  • hot glue gun
  • scissors

Instructions

  1. Watch the video. Follow along with the video tutorial to learn how to make your own fall open book vase.
  2. Find the midpoint of the book. (I used about 45 pages). Once you've gathered the number of pages, use a pencil to mark about halfway across all of the pages.
  3. Cut the pages. I cut in sections of 4-5 pages each. Depending on the type of scissors you have, you can do more or less. Once you have all of the pages cut, rip off the tops of the cut section.
  4. Begin making ripples. Hot glue 5 pages at a time to create a ripple effect. Continue gluing until all of the pages are glued together. There should be 9 sections total.
  5. Add faux greenery. Remove the tags and some of the stem from the greenery then place it into the holes of the pages glued. (See video for the technique I used.)
  6. Continue adding foliage. I used leftover fall foliage I had on hand (leaves and flowers) to continue embellishing the book.
  7. Add leaves between folded pages. I used 2 leaves at a time, folded the stems, and hot glued them between the back folds of the pages.
  8. Embellish with ribbon. Start by cutting a piece of natural ribbon and laying it across the folds. Then cut a piece of burlap ribbon in half and fray the cut side. Then cut it into 6 pieces of scrappy ribbon. Also cut short pieces of natural ribbon and the ends at a 45 degree angle. Create a bow using twine in the middle. Initially, you're creating a bow. (Watch the video to see how I did this.)
  9. Secure everything with hot glue. Start by securing the natural ribbon between the last folds. Then, hot glue the ribbon directly in the center.

  1. That is beautiful! I’m going to get the supplies to make one and give it as a gift. I may do 2 so I can keep one for Thanksgiving. It can be stored for coming years. Thanks so much! I love book(page) projects!
