Why I love this craft

Once I started crafting with corrugated part of scrap cardboard, I knew there would be many things I’d want to create with it. This is a craft project that uses a lot of scrap things you may already have on hand, which makes it super inexpensive. I also love how it turned out and it’s the perfect touch of fall decor I needed to fill a space in my living room.

What’s the best way to reveal the corrugated part of a piece of cardboard?

I’ve always used the damp cloth method, which was actually a tip from a YouTube subscriber. All you need is a wash cloth that hasn’t been rung out all the way and your cardboard piece. Rub the rag over the scrap piece and let it sit for about 5 minutes.

You can then easily peel off the top layer using your fingernail, a pen blade, or butter knife. It should peel off relatively easy and reveal the corrugated portion of the cardboard.

The inspiration for this craft:

I’ve made lots of corrugated crafts, but last year I made a Corrugated Cardboard Pumpkin Craft, so this year I wanted to add another fall-inspired craft. I knew I couldn’t go wrong by adding a hanging leaf sign!

Corrugated Leaf Hanging Sign

Yield: 1 sign

Grab an old box and a leaf printable to make your own Corrugated Leaf Hanging Sign! It's quick, easy, and leaves you with beautiful fall decor.

Materials

  • 1 scrap piece of a cardboard box
  • leaf cutout printable
  • transfer paper
  • (2) wooden paint stir sticks
  • Americana gel stain (color: oak)
  • tiny piece of dish sponge (for painting)
  • Americana acrylic craft paint (colors: aloe and ocre)
  • 1 piece of drop cloth fabric
  • manilla folder, or other thin cardboard
  • Elmer's glue
  • ribbon
  • twine

Instructions

  1. Watch the tutorial video. Follow along for step-by-step instructions on how to make your own corrugated leaf hanging sign.
  2. Prep the cardboard piece. Start by applying water to the scrap cardboard piece via a damp cloth and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then cut the cardboard piece down to size (according to the template).
  3. Peel away the top layer of the cardboard. You can use a pen blade, fingernail, or whatever you want to peel off the top layer of the scrap piece.
  4. Transfer the leaf cutout to the scrap piece. Secure the template onto the transfer paper and both onto the back of the cardboard piece. Trace over the entire image with a pen.
  5. Cut out the leaf. Using heavy duty craft scissors, cut along the traced leaf.
  6. Cut the paint sticks. Using Miter shears, cut the handles off the paint sticks.
  7. Stain the paint sticks. Stain each stick using Americana gel stain in the color oak. Do not paint the side that has the ruler marks. Use a paper towel to wipe off any excess stain.
  8. Paint the corrugated side of the leaf. Using a tiny piece of dish sponge, paint the leaf with the two paint colors (aloe and ocre).
  9. Create the backing of the sign. Cut one side of a manilla folder down to the size of the drop cloth (leaving an edge on the top and bottom). Fray the sides of the cloth and glue it to the manilla folder piece. Use a paint brush to smooth out the glue prior to placing it onto the folder.
  10. Add the paint sticks. Hot glue one paint stick across the top and the other across the bottom.
  11. Embellish the leaf. I used a burlap/twine-like ribbon and tied it into a bow using the bunny ear method. Hot glue the bow onto the bottom of the leaf (just above the stem). Hot glue the leaf onto the drop cloth sign.
  12. Create a hanger. Using 3 pieces of twine but about 2 feet long, braid them together to create a hanger. Be sure to knot both ends so they do not become unbraided.
  13. Attach the hanger. Flip the hanging sign over and attach the ends of the braided twine to each side using a generous amount of hot glue. Hang your sign wherever you'd like an extra touch of fall!
