Why I love this craft

I love having lots of different ornament types to decorate with for the holidays. Whether I’m using them on my tree or to create garland to hang over the fireplace area, these types of crafts come in handy.

Do I need a certain type of box?

No. I order a lot of stuff from Amazon, so I always have these boxes on hand. You can also recycle diaper boxes or other boxes that are thick and have a corrugated center.

The inspiration for this craft:

I’ve made a few corrugated crafts in the past – a corrugated pumpkin, a corrugated Easter bunny sign, and even a Christmas tree farm sign – and I absolutely loved the finished textured look. When paired with a strand of garland, it really makes the ornaments pop.

Active Time: 30 minutes

These Mini Corrugated Tree Ornaments are made with a recycled box and a few other supplies I already had on hand. An easy and inexpensive Christmas craft!

Materials

  • Recycled cardboard box (I had an old Amazon box)
  • Craft paint (avocado, aloha, light green)
  • Twine
  • Wooden dowels (small)

Tools

  • rag and water
  • jumbo paint stick (or ruler, for measuring)
  • heavy duty craft scissors
  • pouncer brush
  • hot glue

Instructions

  1. Watch video tutorial. Watch the video for a step-by-step walkthrough for creating your own tree ornaments.
  2. Cut the box. Cut a flap of the box and apply a thin layer of water (twice if necessary) to easily peel away the top layer. peel apart cardboard layers
  3. Cut the prepped box into strips. I used a jumbo paint stick to measure the strips. However, if you don't have one, the measurements are 12"x1 3/8". cut cardboard into strips
  4. Paint the strips. I used several shades of green for an ombre look. Use a poncer brush when painting. paint cardboard strips
  5. Cut ends. Cut a 1.5" piece and a 2" piece off the ends of the strips. These will be base of the twisted end of the Christmas tree.
  6. Create the ends. Tie a piece of twine. Start with the 1" piece and add the wooden stick and the end of the twine and hot glue them onto it. Begin wrapping the cut piece around the wooden dowel, applying additional hot glue until fully wrapped. (Watch video to see how this is done.) Repeat for the smaller cut piece, putting it just above the previous one attached. hot glue cardboard strips around wood dowel
  7. Cut more pieces. Cut a 2" piece and a 3.5" piece. Hot glue the smaller piece on top of the two previously attached in a staggered position. Attach the 3.5" each piece a quarter of an inch below the piece your just attached.
  8. Finish the tree. Use whatever piece you have left, cut it in half lengthwise, and glue it flush with the bottom piece. Use heavy duty craft scissors to cut off the remaining dowel. cut off wood dowel
  9. Repeat steps 5-8. Repeat these steps to create more trees. Use them as ornaments or garland.
