Why I love this craft
When I saw this rug, I just knew I had to get it – but not to be used for walking on. Instead, I instantly thought to turn it into a wall hanging for a unique space in my new craft room (reveal coming soon!). With just a few materials and supplies, this rug went from the floor to the wall.
A good sewing alternative
I don’t mind using the sewing machine, but I often opt for fabric glue when possible. In the case of making this rug hangable, I used a combination of a ribbon piece, fabric glue, and strong double-sided tape. If you don’t mind sewing, you can do that for this project as well.
The inspiration for this craft:
I’ve made other fabric wall hangings before, but using an actual throw rug is a first!

DIY Rug Wall Hanging
Watch how easy it is to turn an inexpensive woven rug into DIY Rug Wall Hanging decor - perfect to decorate any space in your home!
Materials
- woven rug (I bought mine at Marshalls)
- small curtain rod
- black spray paint
- gold rub n' buff
- clear coat finishing spray
- fabric glue
- linen ribbon
- books (for weighing down the project while the fabric glue dries)
- heavy duty double-sided tape
Tools
- small paint brush
- fabric scissors
- nonstick scissors
Instructions
- Watch the video. Follow the video tutorial for a step by step walkthrough on how to make your own rug wall hanging.
- Prep the curtain rods. Spray paint the ends of the curtain rod, about a foot in. Let it dry completely.
- Paint the rods. Apply a coat of gold rub and buff. Let it dry completely. Then apply a clear coat finish.
- Prep the rug. Remove the seam of one long side of the rug using fabric scissors or a seam ripper.
- Apply the ribbon. Use a generous amount of fabric glue to fix the ribbon along the cut seam. This will add enough length, so that the rug can hang nicely. Use books or any other heavy object to press down the ribbon and dry overnight.
- Seal the seam. Apply double-sided tape to the top of the ribbon. Work in patches when sealing the ribbon over the curtain rod.
- Hang the rug. Measure the space on your wall and hang your new art!
