This door hanger is wonderful way to decorate for summer holidays like Independence Day or Memorial Day. Follow my quick step-by-step tutorial, and I’ll show you how to create a unique patriotic door hanger using affordable supplies from the dollar store.
Let’s talk about dollar store seasonal window clings
Every holiday, the Dollar Tree typically sells fun seasonal items – like napkins, paper plates, door hangers, AND window clings.
Window clings are fun for decorating windows, but did you know that they can also be Mod-Podged onto your seasonal crafts as well?

Feel free to get creative with the window clings and paint color that you choose. I used deep navy paint, since that complimented the background of my selected window clings. But, depending on the style of the window clings you find – you may want to use red, white, or any other complimentary color.

Dollar Store Patriotic Door Hanger
Grab a plain wood round door hanger and some 4th of July window clings – and make this Dollar Store Patriotic Door Hanger.
Materials
- Dollar store window clings (patriotic designs)
- Dollar store hanging wood circle
- Acrylic craft paint, to compliment the background of the window clings, I used midnight navy
- Mod Podge, matte
- Ribbon and twine for hanging and embellishing
Tools
- 1-inch flat paintbrush
- Scissors
- Smoothing tool
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Instructions
- Watch the video tutorial before you begin, and let that be your visual guide for this project.
- Use a flat paintbrush, and apply a base coat of navy acrylic paint to the front of the wood circle. Allow it to dry completely, and apply a second coat if needed.
- Carefully cut out the individual window cling designs using scissors. Set them in place (with the backing on still) to get a feel for your preferred design and placement.
- One at a time, lift each cling and apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the wood hanger underneath. Remove any backing or excess plastic from the clings. Carefully press the cling onto Mod-Podged area. Smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles using a smoothing tool. Continue this process for all the clings, ensuring they are securely adhered to the wood surface.
- Once all the clings are in place and the Mod Podge has dried, apply a thin, even coat of Mod Podge over the entire surface of the wood circle. This will seal the clings and provide a protective layer. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely.
- Use hot glue to adhere jute rope around the outer edge of the door hanger.
- Make a bow with patriotic ribbon and hot glue it to the top of the door hanger.
- Hang the door hanger with ribbon or twine.

Creating a patriotic door hanger doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. By using dollar store window clings, a hanging wood circle, acrylic craft paint, and Mod Podge, you can make a beautiful and budget-friendly decoration. Follow these step-by-step instructions, and in no time, you’ll have a charming patriotic door hanger to celebrate special occasions throughout the year. Happy crafting!

That is such a clever idea. I must pay more attention to window clings! I would also use a pizza pan if I couldn’t find the wood rounds at my local DT. The cost of this project would be around $3.75 if one buys the wood round/rope, and window cling at Dollr Tree (and had Mod Podge at home.) Thanks for sharing your creativity.
Yes! I originally thought about doing a pizza pan door hanger for this one, but then I spotted the wood rounds. Thanks for the feedback 🙂
