Making this wine cork American flag is super simple, even your kids can join in to help or make one of their own.

One of the best things about the patriotic theme is you don’t have to wait until Memorial Day or the 4th of July to show off your American pride.

It’s also a theme that can fit with just about any style, especially the farmhouse style. Using wine corks adds its own unique touch, but turning them into the American flag turns them into something extra special.

WHY I LOVE THIS CRAFT

Anytime I can craft using minimal supplies – or supplies I can pick up at the Dollar Tree – I’m all in. It’s amazing what can be done with a few supplies and a little bit of time.

The versatility of this project is also something I admire. You can scale this wine cork American flag to any size, making it smaller or larger. This is also a craft you can do with your craft friends or as a family project!

TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE A WINE CORK AMERICAN FLAG

Follow this quick step-by-step tutorial to make your own American flag craft:

  1. Lay out 35 wine corks on your work surface, 7 rows tall and 5 columns wide. Separate the corks for painting; 16 red, 13 white, and 6 blue.
Lay out 35 wine corks and paint 16 red
  2. Paint the 16 wine corks with red acrylic craft paint. Make the coat light, so that the printing on the cork shows through for added interest.
  3. Paint the 13 wine corks with white acrylic craft paint. Add some water to the paint, so that the printing on the cork shows through for added interest. Loosely paint 3 wooden stars with white acrylic craft paint.
Paint 13 wine corks white and paint 6 wine corks blue
  4. Paint the 6 wine corks with blue acrylic craft paint. Make the coat light, so that the printing on the cork shows through for added interest.
  5. Measure a rectangular of scrap cardboard, like a shipping box, to be 6” tall by 9” long. Cut out the rectangle with scissors. Starting at the bottom, attach 5 red corks in a row using a glue gun and glue sticks. Add a row of 5 white corks, then alternate red and white until the flag has four red stripes and three white stripes.
  6. Add the six blue corks to the top left-hand corner of the flag to represent the field of stars.
Hot glue wine corks to a cardboard rectangle and attach a twine hanger
  7. Once all the corks are glued in place, trim any excess cardboard from the edges with scissors.
  8. Measure and cut a 12” length of natural jute twine. Flip the flag over on your work surface and attach the twine hanger to the top right and top left-hand corners with a glue gun and glue sticks.
  9. Using a paintbrush in a dabbing motion, add the holographic glitter acrylic craft paint to the three wooden stars to add some sparkle.

** TIP: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.

OPTIONAL: This project can be scaled up or down to create the perfect size flag for your home décor.
