Why I love this craft

Dollar Store Silver Trays

The dollar store usually has those plastic serving trays in the party supply aisle. They come in clear, silver, or sometimes a bright color. They’re perfect for serving up appetizers and snacks at your next get-together. BUT – they’re also perfect for your next craft project – like when I embellished a silver tray with Dollar Tree wall decals.

Let’s talk about dollar store seasonal window clings

Every holiday, the Dollar Tree typically sells fun seasonal items – like napkins, paper plates, door hangers, AND window clings.

Window clings are fun for decorating windows, but did you know that they can also be Mod-Podged onto your seasonal crafts as well?

supplies for a DIY decorative Easter tray

Feel free to get creative with the window clings and paint color that you choose. I used light blue paint, since that complimented the background of my selected window clings. But, depending on the style of the window clings you find – you may want to use pastel pink, yellow, cream, or any other complimentary color.

  • Silver metal serving tray
  • Easter window clings (or decals)
  • White spray primer
  • Chalk Paint (French Blue)
  • Mod Podge (matte)

  • 1" flat paint brush
  • Heat gun (for removing the label)

  1. Watch the video tutorial. Let that be your visual guide for this project.
  2. Prep the serving tray. Begin by cleaning the tray really well. Peel off the label on the back using a heat gun. Use Goo Gone to remove any adhesive residue if necessary. Wash the tray with soap or wipe down with rubbing alcohol.
  3. Prepare the tray. Go outside and spray both sides of the tray with a light coat of white spray primer.
  4. Paint the tray with light blue chalk paint. Paint a coat with a first coat of chalk paint. Let dry, and apply another coat or touch-ups as necessary. Let the second coat dry completely.
  5. Add the large window cling. Dry fit the window cling first, and trim it down to size if necessary. Once fitted and snipped, add a layer of matte mod podge. Starting in the center, smooth the window cling onto the area with the mod podge. . add a layer of Mod Podge to the tray.
  6. Seal with a coat of mod podge. Apply an additional coat of mod podge over the entire tray to protect the paint finish.
  7. OPTIONAL: use a "dry brush" technique with some white chalk paint to distress the tray edges a bit. Let dry.

It will take about 24 hours for the mod podge to dry completely.
