Why I love this craft

I started saving jars years ago, so it’s always nice to come across a craft project idea that gives me an opportunity to use some of them up. I like this craft because it’s pretty low maintenance, doesn’t call for lots of supplies, and yields a decor piece that fits perfectly with my style.

What’s the best way to remove labels from jars?

I’ve always used the hot soapy water method to easily remove labels from jars. It’s able to remove the stickiness from the labels as well. However, if you have a jar that has a label or writing on it that seems a little tough to get off, you can always use the nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol and q-tip method.

The inspiration for this craft:

Last month I created another Fall Glass Jar Lantern using window clings and mod podge. For this craft project, I decided to use an image transfer. This didn’t need a coat of mod podge and I love how it turned out.

Fall Glass Jar Vase

Yield: 1 jar

Grab an old glass jar and fall-themed image transfers to make a Fall Glass Jar Vase – a super cute addition to your autumn decor.

Materials

  • recycled jar
  • fall-themed rub-on transfer
  • Rust-oleum chalk paint (color: white)
  • Deco Art acrylic paint (color: deep ocre and aloe)
  • painter's tape
  • twine

Tools

  • 1" flat paint brush
  • popsicle stick (for smoothing the transfer)

Instructions

  1. Watch the tutorial video. Follow along with the video for step-by-step instructions for creating your own fall glass jar lantern.
  2. Prepare the jar. Use hot soapy water to remove the label. If you have printing on the jar (expiration date), you can easily remove that with nail polish remover and a q-tip. Apply a piece of painter's tape around three sections of the jar to create stripe.
  3. Paint the jar. Apply a coat of white chalk paint on the bottom and top portion of the jar.
  4. Apply color. Once it dries, follow up with two coats of green paint on the top and bottom and an orange stripe around the top to get full coverage. (Watch the video to see how I did this.)
  5. Remove the painter's tape. While the paint is still drying (or a crisp line with minimal bleed), remove the painter's tape. Now allow the paint to dry completely before moving to the next step.
  6. Add the image transfer. Smooth it onto the unpainted section of the jar and smooth it out with a popsicle stick. Then, remove the top layer of the sticker.
  7. Assemble the vase. Design the lantern handle by wrapping jute twine around the mouth of the jar and tie it in a bow, Pop in your favorite flowers and you have a cute little vase.
