Why I love this craft
I love this pumpkin craft because not only is it an easy project, but it’s also super inexpensive. Since I already have the paint on hand, the only supplies I needed were the three pumpkins, the galvanized pot, the faux greenery and the styrofoam block – making it around $8 to make.
Acrylic Paint versus Chalk Paint
You may notice that I favor chalk paint over acrylic paint, and there are a few reasons as to why. For starters, chalk paint gives a matte finish, which comes in handy with the style of decor I like to create.
Secondly, chalk paint requires minimal prep work. I still like to use a base coat, typically plain old white rust-oleum chalk paint, but chalk paint can also work well without one (depending on the surface I’m painting).
Last but not least, when it comes to versatility, coverage, and distressing, chalk paint is hands down the way to go.
The inspiration for this craft:
I’ve create a variety of topiaries in the past, but I especially like this Button Pumpkin Topiary Sign. I used craft sticks and lots of (painted) buttons to make this beautiful sign that would actually complement this pumpkin topiary craft.

Mini Stacked Pumpkin Topiary
Grab a few small pumpkins from Dollar Tree to make this super cute Pumpkin Topiary.
Materials
- small pumpkins (Dollar Tree)
- rust-oleum chalk paint (white)
- folkart home decor chalk paint (sage, barely pink, and sage shadow)
- waverly chalk paint (moss and pumpkin)
- brown paint
- galvanized pot
- square styrofoam block
- faux green foliage
- spanish moss
- hot glue
Tools
- scissors
- 1" flat paint brush
- pen blade
Instructions
- Watch tutorial video. Follow along with the video to learn how to make your own pumpkin topiary.
- Prep the pumpkins. Cut off the tags on each pumpkin and apply a coat of white chalk paint. Set the wet pumpkins on parchment paper so they don't stick when dried.
- Add a base coat. Painted each pumpkin a different color - moss, sage, and barely pink. Let dry.
- Add a blend. One at a time, add another base coat of paint. Before the paint dries, blend in a bit of accent color. Follow the contours of the pumpkin and continue mixing colors and playing around until you achieve your desired finish.
- Paint one stem. Paint the stem of the top pumpkin brown.
- Assemble the topiary. Use a pen blade (or knife) to to trim the styrofoam block so it fits inside the pot. Begin hot gluing the pumpkins together, gluing the first one to the styrofoam block. Be sure to rip off the stems on the bottom two so they glue together easily.
- Embellish. Once the pumpkins are glued on top of one another, fill in the pot openings with the spanish moss. Also add a bit of moss between each pumpkin. Add sprigs of faux greenery throughout.
Notes
If your chalk paint has thickened over time, spray it with a bit of water to thin it out. (You'll see me do this in the video.)
