Why I love this craft
Turning a plastic vase into a cute holiday centerpiece all while doing so on a dime are just a couple of reasons why I enjoy this craft. Aside from buying the plastic carafe, I was able to use materials I already have on hand, which is a win-win.
What is the best mod podge to use for this craft?
I’ve always gravitated towards using matte mod podge. But I recently discovered ultra matte mod podge. I think this finish is a tad more suited to achieving that super matte “chalk paint” finish, but either would work just fine.

Christmas Carafe Vase
All you need is a Dollar Store vase, a printable image, and a few other supplies to make this super cute Christmas Carafe Vase.
Materials
- plastic carafe vase (Dollar Tree)
- Rustoleum chalk paint
- Folkart matte paint (color: cardinal red)
- ulta matte mod podge
- printer paper
- tissue paper
- painter's tape
- printable Christmas image
Tools
- 1" flat paint brush
- fine point paint brush
Instructions
- Watch the video. Follow along with the video for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to make your own Christmas carafe vase.
- Paint the vase. Cover the entire vase in a coat of Rustoleum chalk paint. I did two coats, letting each coat dry between.
- Print image onto tissue paper. Attach a piece of tissue paper to a piece of printer paper using painter's tape. Print image onto the tissue paper. Tape around the edges ONLY.
- Cut out the image. Once the image has been printed, cut out the tissue paper and down to size.
- Apply image to vase. Use a paint brush to apply a generous amount of ultra matte mod podge to the vase. Smooth the image directly onto the mod podge.
- Add an additional coat of mod podge. Very carefully and working from the center outward, apply another coat of mod podge to seal the image onto the vase.
- Embellish the vase. Paint a red rim around the opening and bottom of the vase. Add your own creativity. Let this dry completely and then add another coat of mod podge.
- Add a bow. I also added a gold bow. Watch the video to see how I did this.
- Add greenery to the vase. The step is optional and you can add any kind of greenery or flowers you prefer. I used faux frosted greenery, but fresh flowers would look great as well.
