Why I love this craft

I love crafting with Dollar Tree supplies, and these mini bowl bells turned out amazing. Since they came in a 12-pack, I was able to assemble six bells, which was plenty to tie together into a trio set and decorate the perfect space in my home.

What’s the best method for painting the plastic?

I always use a primer as the base coat. Rustoleum primer spray in black or white are always my go-to. This makes it effortless when adding whatever paint color you want. If you can’t spray paint, plain white Rustoleum chalk paint (I buy it a quart at a time) is a great brush-on option as well.

The inspiration for this craft:

I’ve made DIY Large Jingle Bells using metal bowls, so I knew this project would turn out great with plastic bowls. I also used the hand-drawn bell method to add any extra touch.

Mini Bowl Bells

These Mini Bowl Bells are easy to make and will help you decorate your home this holiday season without breaking the bank.

Materials

  • 12-pack of mini plastic bowls (Dollar Tree)
  • E6000 glue
  • mini wood rings
  • Rustoleum white spray primer
  • Folkart matte paint (color: linen)
  • scrap paper
  • antique rub and buff
  • Folkart home decor chalk paint (color: Maui sand)
  • sprig of faux pine
  • velvet ribbon
  • twine

Tools

  • miter shears
  • hot glue gun
  • 1" flat paint brush
  • fine point paint brush
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • small scrap piece of dish sponge

Instructions

  1. Watch the video tutorial. Follow along with the step-by-step video to learn how to make your own mini bowl bells.
  2. Arrange bowls on your work space. Separate and place the mini bowls onto your work space.
  3. Cut the wooden rings. Using miter shears (or heavy duty scissors), cut the unfinished wood rings in half.
  4. Assemble bells. Use a combination of E6000 and hot glue to attach two bowls together to make a bell. Be sure to align the bowls evenly.
  5. Attach bell handles. Put a dab of E6000 glue on each end of the cut ring and attach it to the top of the bell.
  6. Prep the bells. Take the bells outside and spray them evenly with a coat of Rustoleum white spray primer.
  7. Paint the bells. Apply a coat of paint to each bell, starting with the top half. Allow that to dry and then paint the bottom half. I did 2 coats, letting each coat dry completely before painting the other.
  8. Create the bell template. Draw a small bell shape onto a piece of scrap paper. This will be the template used to trace the bell shape four times onto each bell. Once you have it traced, cut it out.
  9. Trace the bell shape onto each bell. Use a pencil and your template to trace the bell shape onto each bell.
  10. Add antique rub and buff. Use a small scrap piece of a sponge to add a bit of rub around each traced bell. (Watch the video to see how I did this.)
  11. Paint the traced bell shapes. Use a fine point paint brush to paint each traced bell. Let it dry.
  12. Paint the handles. Use the same color to paint the bells to paint the handles on each bell. Let them dry completely.
  13. Add more rub and buff. Come back in with the same rub and buff and sponge to add more of a rustic golden look to each bell. (Watch the video to see how I did this.)
  14. Embellish the top of each bell. Use a sprig of faux pine cut down to add small embellishments to the tops of each bell. Use hot glue to attach.
  15. Make a bow. Use the bunny ear method to create bows for each bell. Hot glue them to the top of each bell.
  16. Create the hanger. Use twine to create the hangers. Watch the video to see how I made these.
