How to make a tin tile reverse canvas.
Why I love this craft
If you have followed my YouTube Channel or my blog for any amount of time, then you know I am a big fan of the reverse canvas craft. If you’re new to trying it, there is bit of a learning curve in the beginning with removing the canvas. However, once you get used to it, it becomes relatively easy to do.
The finished look of every craft I’ve done with this method has turned out super cute!
What is a reverse canvas craft?
As you’ll see in the tutorial, I start this project with a plain 8×10 stretched canvas. But if you cut the canvas fabric, you will reveal a little wooden frame inside.
This wooden frame can be used to make a TON of cool DIY wall decor projects. If you want to learn more about this craft trend, you can read my Reverse Canvas 101 Tutorial.
The inspiration for this craft:
It’s hard to pick just one inspiration for this craft, but keeping in line with Christmas in July, I’m going with one of my holiday favorites – Faux Shiplap Christmas Sign.
This craft uses the reverse canvas method to create a shiplap-looking sign that also incorporates mini half beads, craft sticks, and greenery garland.

Tin Tile Reverse Canvas
Making this Tin Tile Reverse Canvas takes just a few Dollar Tree supplies and is an easy way to add a festive touch to your home decor.
Materials
- faux tin tile piece (Dollar Tree)
- 8x10 canvas (craft store)
- Americana gel stain (oak color)
- whit chalk paint
- E6000
- hot glue
- small greenery wreath
- holiday bells
Tools
- pen blade (or razor)
- 1" paint brush
- pouncer brush
- pencil
Instructions
- Watch the video tutorial. Follow along with the video for a step-by-step guide for making your own tin tile reverse canvas.
- Prepare the canvas. Start by removing the canvas paper from the wooden frame. I use an pin blade for best precision. Score all the way around the perimeter of the frame, close to the staples.
- Stain the frame. Apply a stain to the frame. I used a regular gel stain in the color oak. Use a paper towel to wipe away any excess (if necessary) and set aside to dry.
- Prepare faux tin piece. Remove the backing and peel away the adhesive piece. Discard them as you won't be using them. Paint the tin piece with a pouncer brush. Set aside to dry.
- Trace the frame onto the tin tile. Lay the dried tin tile painted side down and use a pencil to trace the canvas frame onto the back. Cut inside the pencil line so the tile piece fits perfectly onto the frame.
- Secure the tin tile piece. Use a combination of E6000 and hot glue to secure the tile piece onto the frame. Make the the painted side is facing out once you turn the frame over.
- Embellish the reversed canvas. I added a small green wreath I picked up at Target a few years ago and these holiday bells I made a few weeks ago.
