Why I love this craft
It’s no secret that I love crafting with the bamboo cuttings boards and mini crates from Dollar Tree. I have to confess, though, that I’ve noticed the crates getting smaller over the months. However, they’re still super easy to craft with and yield some pretty amazing results.
What if I can’t find a bamboo cutting board?
Don’t worry, you can still make this craft. You could easily swap out a piece of unfinished wood from any craft store, or even a piece of scrap wood. The creative possibilities are just about endless!
The inspiration for this 4th of July craft:
You may remember me making a Dollar Store Flower Crate Craft using most of the very same materials I use with this patriotic version. It’s a craft that’s super inexpensive and yields a beautiful result.
I just changed things up a bit to take this craft idea from spring into summer. Let’s get crafting!

Patriotic Flower Crate
A Dollar Store bamboo cutting board and wooden crate come together for a festive Patriotic Flower Crate - a super easy craft to make for 4th of July.
Materials
- Bamboo cutting board (Dollar Tree)
- Wooden mini crate (Dollar Tree)
- Craft Paint (white, red)
- Land That I Love decal (made on my Cricut)
- Burlap
- Faux Greenery
- Faux Red Flowers
- Wood glue
- Styrofoam balls (you can use square or rectangle)
- Transfer tape
Tools
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- 1" paint brush
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Heavy duty craft scissors
- Smoothing tool
- Nonstick scissors
Instructions
- Watch the tutorial. Follow along with the video for a step-by-step walkthrough for creating your own patriotic flower crate.
- Paint the wooden crate and cutting board. Apply a coat of white paint onto the wood crate and cutting board. Let them both dry.
- Attach the crate to the cutting board. Apply wood glue and hot glue to one side of the crate and attach it to the bottom of the cutting board.
- Set up for painter's tape lines. Using a ruler and pencil, mark the halfway points on the crate and the cutting board.
- Apply painters tape. Use nonstick scissors to cut strip of painters tape in half. Then apply the half strip of tape next to the marks created on the crate and cutting board. Then eyeball and place wider strips next to the smaller strips. Be sure to smooth the tape down for crisp lines.
- Paint the exposed areas red. Using the 1" paintbrush, paint the stripe areas on the crate and cutting board red. You do not have to wait for the paint to dry to peel off the painters tape. This will help create crisper lines. Once you remove the tape, then allow the craft to dry.
- Dry fit the decal. Position the decal where you'll want it to go first and then you can get an idea of how high you'd like the flowers be.
- Fill the crate. I ran out of styrofoam square and rectangle pieces, so I had to use balls. Hot glue the styrofoam into the bottom of the crate. Attach faux greenery to the styrofoam and fill in the gaps, attaching the pieces with hot glue. Attach a few sprigs of red flowers throughout the greenery. Hide the open areas with small cut pieces of burlap. Secure the burlap with hot glue.
- Attach the decal. Place a piece of transfer tape over the decal and use a smoothing tool to ensure it is all pressed onto the tape. Peel of the backing and transfer the decal onto the cutting board.
- Enjoy your new decor! Place your new patriotic flower box wherever you'd like.
Notes
Be sure to have your pencil marks outside of the tape so they get covered up with the red paint.
