Why I love this craft

When I’m looking to update my decor for summer, I sometimes gravitate toward the nautical theme. I’ve made lots of nautical-themed decor like these nautical stripe chalk painted jars and a starfish craft made with buttons on a canvas.

Similar to those crafts, this one is just as easy and has a super cute finished look. Not to mention, it costs just a few dollars to make.

How much sea glass do I need?

I grabbed three bags to make sure that I had plenty of sizes to choose from. Since you won’t do a dry-fit for this craft project, you’ll need to have lots of sizes to choose from. Leftover pieces can be put into your stash to use for future projects.

The inspiration for this craft:

Several years ago, I made a couple of DIY Sea Glass Bottles by upcycling them with spray paint and paint sticks. For this particular craft, I used krylon sea glass spray paint because it’s amazing for creating a sea glass effect on plain clear glass.

  • Sea glass pieces (Dollar Tree)
  • E6000 super glue
  • Hot glue

Tools

  • small paint brush

Instructions

  1. Watch the tutorial video. Watch the video for a thorough walkthrough for making your own sea glass lantern.
  2. Begin gluing sea glass pieces. Use a dab of E6000 for permanent hold and a dab of hot glue for quick hold. Cover the jar with sea glass pieces, leaving about 1 1/4-inch space between pieces.
  3. Fill in spaces with spackling. Once you have the entire jar covered in sea glass pieces, apply the spackling and use a small paint brush to spread it into the spaces of the glass pieces. Set aside to dry. add spackle between sea glass pieces
  4. Smooth the rough edges. To get rid of the rough edges, use a little bit of water on your finger and gently rub over them. Let it dry.
  5. Finishing touches. Remove any additional spackling from the surface of the glass pieces with a rag dipped in water. Add a tealight candle to turn it into a cute summery, nautical-themed decor piece.

Notes

It is normal for the spackling to look pink. It will turn white once it is dried.
