Why I love this craft
It’s no secret that I’m a BIG fan of crafting with dollar store cutting boards. The Dollar Tree used to sell plastic cutting boards with handles – that I used for these 3 Christmas cutting board crafts last holiday season. But now, it seems like Dollar Tree has been selling these little bamboo cutting boards:
Never the one to abandon a favorite craft supply, I decided to whip up a craft with this new style of cutting board. Last year, I made this trendy DIY wood bead riser. And today, I’m back at it – making a spring craft.
Update: I also made a mini hanging wood sign using this exact same cutting board. Check it out!
Update 2: I loved this craft so much, that I re-made it for the 4th of July. Be sure to check out my Patriotic Mini Flower Crate.

Spring Flower Crate Craft
Make a delightful dollar store flower crate craft to decorate for spring, using a Dollar Tree bamboo cutting board, wood crate, and flowers.
Materials
- bamboo cutting board, Dollar Tree
- mini wood crate, Dollar Tree
- wood glue
- half wood balls
- cream chalk paint
- light pink chalk paint
- brown chalk paint (Decoart coffee bean)
- craft foam
- faux greenery and flowers
- Vinyl decal or other embellishment of choice
Tools
Instructions
- Watch the video tutorial before you begin, and let that be your visual guide for this craft.
- Glue the wood crate to the cutting board: Add a few dabs of wood glue to the back of the mini wood crate. Then add two rows of hot glue, and quickly set the wood crate into place on the cutting board. The hot glue provides immediate hold, so you can move onto the next step. The wood glue provides more permanent long-term hold.
- Add half wood balls: Use wood glue and a paint brush to attach half wood balls all the way around the front of the wood frame. You may want to lay all of the half wood balls out first, to make sure you get the right spacing, before gluing. Set aside to let the wood glue dry.
- Base coat: Brush a coat of cream chalk paint over the whole project. Do NOT wait for the paint to dry before moving onto the next step.
- Add a distressed paint finish: Layer in light pink and brown paint, until you achieve your desired finish. I dry brushed in the brown paint, and then pounced up and down with the brush to soften some of the lines. Let the paint dry.
- Add flowers: Cut a piece of craft foam down to size, and hot glue it into the wood crate. Then fill the crate with small greenery and flower stems.
- Embellish with vinyl: Use transfer vinyl to add your cut vinyl decal.
Notes
About the vinyl decal that I used: this one came from Cricut. It's called "Fresh Flower Market" and has as ID #M432ADBB8
