It’s no secret that I’m a BIG fan of crafting with dollar store cutting boards. The Dollar Tree used to sell plastic cutting boards with handles – perfect for crafting. And then one day they were gone! Cue the sad violin.
But now, it seems like Dollar Tree has been selling these little bamboo cutting boards:

I’ve previously used these little cutting board to make a hanging sign, a wood bead riser, a snowman sign, and even a spring flower crate. But today, I’m making a mini decorative tray with a farmhouse-style grain sack painted finish.

Cutting Board Riser Tray
Another creative craft project to do with a Dollar Tree bamboo cutting board - a riser tray!
Materials
- Bamboo cutting board (Dollar Tree)
- Pack of 1/2-inch wood candle cups or other small wood pieces (Hobby Lobby)
- E6000 Super glue
- Folk Art Matte Paint (parchment)
- Acrylic Paint (navy blue)
- Small cabinet handles
- Mini screws
Tools
- Painter's tape
- 1" paint brush
- Handheld screwdriver tool
Instructions
- Watch the video tutorial before you begin, and let that be your visual guide for this craft.
- Attach the risers. Super glue a wood piece on each corner of the cutting board.
- Paint the cutting board and risers. Apply a coat of paint to the entire cutting board, including the risers. Let dry.
- Tape lines for a grain sack pattern. Using two strips of painter's tape, apply one about a half inch from the top and another strip a half inch from the bottom to create 2 fat lines. Then take 1 strip and cut it in half to create 2 smaller lines and place the tape strips in between the 2 bigger ones.
- Paint the cutting board. Using a very dry brush technique and apply a light coat of navy blue acrylic paint. Before the paint dries, pull off the tape at a 45 degree angle.
- Create pilot holes. Using a handheld screwdriver tool, create small holes where the handles will be attached.
- Attach handles. Screw mini screws into the holes on the handles to attach them to the cutting board. If your screws don't match your handles (like mine) you can paint them black. Now you have a super cute riser tray with handles!

Love this!!
This is awesome! My next project. I really enjoy your tutorials!
