Why I love this craft
When I saw this viral trend, I knew I had to try it. I’ve been used to doing reverse canvas craft projects, so I wanted to give this “busted” look a try. I must say that I’m pretty excited about how it turned out. I actually liked it so much that I created two of them!
How do you create the “busted” look?
Using a pen blade or exacto knife, you’ll want to cut four scores in the center of the canvas. Depending on how much paint you use, you may have to score it several times or use a pair of scissors to finish cutting the pieces. These pieces will then be peeled back and glued to the canvas to create the “busted” look.
The inspiration for this craft
I’ve never made a craft project like this so my inspiration came from several Instagram and TikTok posts. I have, however made plenty of reverse canvas crafts, and I think these can be customized in very similar ways.

DIY Christmas Busted Canvas
Hop on the holiday trend train and make this DIY Christmas Busted Canvas - a unique way to decorate for Christmas this year!
Materials
- square canvas (Dollar Tree)
- matte acrylic paint (colors: red and 2 different shades of green)
- tumbling tower Jenga pieces (Dollar Tree)
- hot glue
- manilla folder
- craft glue stick
- Christmas printable
- scrapbook paper
- faux sprigs of greenery and berries
- twine
- ribbon
Tools
- 1/2" flat paint brush
- 1" flat paint brush
- scissors
- pen blade (or exacto knife)
Instructions
- Watch the video. Follow along with the tutorial video for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to create your own Christmas busted canvas.
- Paint the canvas. Start with a red color and paint the back of the canvas. Paint the front of the canvas green. You do not have to go all the way to the edge.
- Make a base/stand. Hot glue 5 tumbling tower pieces together to create a base or stand. Paint the stand green. (If you want to hang your canvas, you can skip this step.)
- Create a backer. Cut a manilla folder in half. Add a generous amount of craft stick glue to the back of a Christmas printable and secure it onto the manilla folder. Glue a piece of scrapbook paper on the other side.
- Cut slits into the canvas. Cut 8 slits into the canvas using a pen blade or exacto knife. Watch the video to see the method I used to do this.
- Cut printable. Use a pencil to draw cutting lines onto the printable. Cut about an eighth inside of the pencil markings.
- Secure the image. Add hot glue around the backside border of the canvas and secure the printable.
- Make the "busted" look. Add a dab of hot glue at the tip of the triangle cut and roll it backwards to be secured onto the canvas. Watch the video to see how I did this.
- Embellish. I left space at the bottom to add faux sprigs of pine and berries. Create a bow with twine. (Watch the video to see how I made a bow.)
- Add the stand. Hot glue the jenga piece stand onto the back bottom of the canvas to create a stand.
