Why I love this craft

When I saw this viral trend, I knew I had to try it. I’ve been used to doing reverse canvas craft projects, so I wanted to give this “busted” look a try. I made my first busted canvas for Christmas, quickly followed by one for winter. I loved it so much that I decided to make one for Valentine’s Day.

How do you create the “busted” look?

Using a pen blade or exacto knife, you’ll want to cut four scores in the center of the canvas. Depending on how much paint you use, you may have to score it several times or use a pair of scissors to finish cutting the pieces. These pieces will then be peeled back and glued to the canvas to create the “busted” look.

  1. Watch the video. Follow along with the tutorial video for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to create your own Valentine busted canvas
  2. Paint the Inside of the Stretched Canvas. Paint the inside of the stretched canvas with light yellow craft paint. Flip over the canvas.
  3. Paint the Outside of the Stretched Canvas. Paint the outside edges and front panel of the stretched canvas with pink craft craft paint. Let dry.
  4. Create the Printable Backer. Cut the printable image down to size. Use a glue stick to secure to the paper backing of the flat canvas.
  5. Paint the Flat Canvas. Paint the edges and canvas front of the flat canvas with pink craft paint. Let dry
  6. Cut slits into the Canvas. Cut 6 slits into the canvas using a pen blade or exacto knife. You may need to expand the slits with craft scissors.
  7. Assemble the Busted Canvas. Add hot glue around the back edge of the stretched canvas, and secure to the flat canvas.
  8. Make the "busted" look. Add a dab of hot glue at the tip of the triangle cut and roll it backwards to be secured onto the canvas.
  9. Wrap the Canvas. Secure the end of the twine to the bottom edge of the canvas project. Wrap the canvas with twine, securing with hot glue as you go. Wrap around 5-6 times, and then secure the end with more hot glue.
  10. Stamp the Canvas. Use a black ink pad (or in my case, black chalk paint) to stamp X's and O's around the front panel of the canvas.
