Why I love this craft
When I saw this viral trend, I knew I had to try it. I’ve been used to doing reverse canvas craft projects, so I wanted to give this “busted” look a try. I must say that I’m pretty excited about how it turned out. I actually liked it so much that I created two of them!
How do you create the “busted” look?
Using a pen blade or exacto knife, you’ll want to cut four scores in the center of the canvas. Depending on how much paint you use, you may have to score it several times or use a pair of scissors to finish cutting the pieces. These pieces will then be peeled back and glued to the canvas to create the “busted” look.
The inspiration for this craft:
I’ve never made a craft project like this so my inspiration came from several Instagram and TikTok posts.

Christmas Window Cling Busted Canvas
Hop on the holiday trend train and make this Christmas Window Cling Busted Canvas - a unique way to decorate for Christmas this year!
Materials
- 4x6 canvas (Dollar Tree)
- Christmas-themed window clings (Dollar Tree)
- matte acrylic paint (colors: dark green and red)
- jumbo craft sticks (about 12)
- mod podge
- wood bead garland
- cut pieces of ribbon
- twine
Tools
- 1" paint brush
- pencil
- scissors
- miter shears
Instructions
- Watch the video. Follow along with the tutorial video for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to create your own Christmas busted canvas.
- Paint the canvas. Start with a green color and paint the back of the canvas. Paint the front of the canvas red. You do not have to go all the way to the edge.
- Cut slits into the canvas. Cut 8 slits into the canvas using a pen blade or exacto knife. Watch the video to see the method I used to do this.
- Create a wood slack backing. Cut about 10 jumbo craft sticks down to the size of the back of the canvas. Use 2 full-length craft sticks to hold the cut ones in place.
- Add the image. Apply a generous coat of mod podge to the wood slack backing and smooth the window clings onto it. Apply another coat of mod podge on top.
- Secure the backing onto the canvas. Add hot glue around the backside border of the canvas and secure the wood slack backing.
- Make the "busted" look. Add a dab of hot glue at the tip of the triangle cut and roll it backwards to be secured onto the canvas.
- Embellish. I added a Christmas-themed wood bead garland around the border, secured with hot glue. Finish the look with a scrappy bow. (Watch the video to see how I made a scrappy bow)
Notes
Match your paint color with the picture you choose to use on the canvas.
