I really do love making my own Christmas ornaments. For one thing, I get exactly what I want in the colors that match my style. Second, have you seen the price tag on some ornaments? Holey moley! They can be SO expensive.
For these ornaments, I only spent a few dollars on supplies to make some really adorable (in my opinion) Christmas ornaments for one of my THREE Christmas trees.

Supplies needed to make DIY acorn ornaments:
- Plastic Easter eggs*
- adhesive foam
- black spray primer
- green acrylic craft paint
- metallic acrylic craft paint
- paint brushes
- scissors
- twine
- thin decorative rope
- hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- mini gold jingle bells
- black and white thin check ribbon
- faux boxwood stems
*Be sure to pick Easter eggs that do NOT have little holes on the bottom. It’s OK if there are holes on the top, since these will be covered by the thin rope.
Tutorial: Dollar Store Easter eggs turned Christmas Ornaments
Follow this quick video, or read the step-by-step directions below:
- Use foam mounting tape to attach the Easter eggs to a large piece of scrap cardboard. Be sure to mount the eggs upside-down to that the bottoms get completely covered with paint.
- In a well ventilated area, spray the eggs with black spray primer. Let dry.
- Paint over the black primer with green paint. Let dry.
- Make a loop with twine and tie with a knot. This will be the hanger for the ornament. Cut the tail end short. Hot glue the knot to the top of the plastic egg.
- Starting at the twine knot, spiral the thin twine around the top of the plastic egg. Secure with hot glue as you wrap the egg. Be sure to keep the rows of rope close together, so that none of the plastic egg shows through. Continue wrapping until the seam between the top and bottom of the egg is covered. Cut the end of the rope and secure with hot glue.
- Tie a short length of twine around the jingle bell top. Hot glue the twine end to the acorn top.
- Cut a short length of ribbon, and trim the ends. Fold in half, and hot glue the middle to the acorn top.
- Finish the ornament by hot gluing a sprig of faux boxwood to the acorn top. Secure the boxwood by adding hot glue to the backs of the leaves.

DIY Acorn Christmas Ornaments
