MAKING YOUR OWN CRAFT STICK CHRISTMAS TREES IS SUPER EASY, FUN, AND INEXPENSIVE!
Craft sticks to the rescue (again)! I’m amazed at all the creative things you can do with craft sticks. They are truly a versatile supply that I recommend every crafter keep in their stash.
In addition to these beautiful Christmas trees, I’ve been able to make a number of things, including this chic craft stick wreath. The possibilities of what you can make with this Dollar Tree supply are growing in number!
WHY I LOVE THIS PROJECT
I love projects like this mainly because they are unique, but also because they are inexpensive. You can pick up a package of 60 craft sticks from the Dollar Tree and get a number of crafts out of them. As you’ll see below, you only need about 2 craft sticks per Christmas tree ornament, leaving you will so many more to do other things with.
SUPPLIES NEEDED
- Wooden Craft Sticks
- Miter shears or heavy-duty scissors
- Paint Brushes
- DecoArt acrylic craft paint (Colors: Midnight Blue, Lamp (Ebony) Black, Thicket, Cobblestone, Forest Green, and Warm White)
- Twine
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Optional Supplies - Parchment paper (allows you to paint both sides of the craft sticks and protect your work surface)
- Silicone finger protector (for working with hot glue)
TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE CRAFT STICK CHRISTMAS TREES
Follow this quick video, or read the step-by-step directions below.
- Set your shears to cut at a 60-degree angle and cut a triangle-shaped piece of one of the craft sticks. The remaining part of the craft stick will begin the remaining layers of your Christmas tree.
- Use the triangle piece as a marker for sizing the next piece that needs to be cut. (I used a pencil to draw a line so I knew where I’d need to cut.)
- Cut along the line you drew and repeat this step three more times until you have a craft stick Christmas tree made of 5 pieces (or layers). You can squeeze out one ornament from 2 craft sticks.
- Protect your surface area with parchment paper so you can paint the fronts, backs, and edges of the craft sticks without waiting in between.
- Choose one of the colors to paint all the pieces. Allow the pieces to dry.
- Decorate the craft sticks with designs of your choice: dots, swooshes, lines, circles, etc.
- Once your painted design has dried, take a length of twine (about 18″ long) and fold it in half. Create a loop at the top about 2″ long and tie a simple knot (this will serve as the hanger).
- Hot glue the remainder of the twine onto the back of the craft stick Christmas tree pieces leaving a bit of space between each one.
- Trim a 2″ tail on the end of the Christmas tree.
** TIP: You can use any paint color and design that you prefer.
***NOTE: I strongly recommend using a silicone finger protector to make the hot gluing process much easier and quicker.
I absolutely love how this craft turned out and am excited to hear what you designed as well!
