SWITCH UP YOUR CHRISTMAS DECOR THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BY MAKING THIS SUPER EASY VILLAGE.
Christmas trees, bells, ornaments, and garlands are all popular options when decorating for the holiday season.
Although I’ve made some pretty unique Christmas decor, like these DIY Dollar Store Holiday Jute Bells, I hadn’t yet thought to tackle the Christmas village look. Thanks to the mini wooden houses, creating a village was super easy!
WHY I LOVE THIS PROJECT
If you’re an avid Dollar Store crafter then you’re most likely familiar with the little wooden houses that hit the shelves around fall time. These have been used to make some pretty incredible things, and for this craft project, they’ll be used to make a Gingerbread-inspired village using some of my most favorite colors.
SUPPLIES NEEDED
- Mini Wooden Houses – as many as you like!
- Heat Gun (optional for easily removing sticky labels)
- Acrylic Paints (avocado, deep midnight blue, ebony (lamp) black)
- Wood Tint (walnut)
- Chalk Paint (castle)
- Oil-Based Sharpie Paint Pen (white in medium and thick)
TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE A CHRISTMAS VILLAGE
Follow this quick video, or read the step-by-step directions below:
- Prep the houses by peeling the sticky label off the back. I use a heat gun to make this process super quick and easy.
- Paint the flat sides of each wooden house. You may want to do 2 coats since the material soaks up the paint. On the wood-tinted house, I used chalk paint to add a rustic look.
- Using the Sharpie paint pen, draw designs on each wooden house. You can get creative with all types of things like round doors, square doors, icicles, snowflakes, etc.
- Once the houses have dried, display them in a village-like way on a table, mantel, or as a table centerpiece. Add embellishments like faux greenery to add to the look.
** TIP: If you’re like me and lack the confidence in free-hand drawing what you want your houses to look like, pre-draw them on another piece of paper.
***NOTE: You’ll get the best results if you prime your pen. To do this, press it up and down on a separate piece of paper and then proceed with using it to draw.
How cute did these little houses turn out?! I love the versatility of being able to create something different on each one.
