Why I love this craft
When I first came across the “busted canvas” craft style, I instantly knew I wanted to make a few of my own. So far, I’ve made one for just about every holiday and a few seasonal ones, like this one that’s perfect for spring. Just like reverse canvas crafts, a busted canvas can be customized in any style or theme.
Can I use any canvas?
For busted canvas projects, you’ll want to make sure to use a stretched canvas. For this particular craft, I also incorporated a flat panel canvas to serve as the backing for my decorative decals. I’ve used other things with other busted canvas projects, like a scrap of cardboard or really thick cardstock, if you can’t find a flat canvas panel.
The inspiration for this craft
I’ve done several busted canvas crafts, all of which equally serve as an inspiration to continue making them for more seasons and holidays.

- Paint the canvases. Paint the inside of the stretched canvas and the front of the canvas panel.
- Trim wallpaper. Measure the wallpaper using the stretched canvas and cut it down to size.
- Attach wallpaper to canvas. Apply a coat of mod podge to the wallpaper and place the stretched canvas on top. Hot glue around the edges of the canvas and secure the wallpaper.
- Assemble flat canvas panel. Use the size of the flat panel and cut the wood grain wallpaper down to size. Peel and stick the cut wallpaper piece to the back of the panel.
- Cut scores into the stretched canvas. Use a penblade or exact knife to cut 8 scores into the canvas. Use scissors to detach any canvas that did not get cut.
- Create the busted look. Peel back each triangle piece and hot glue it down to the canvas.
- Add decals. Position your decals where you'd like them and peel and stick them to the flat panel canvas.
- Embellish. Create a bow with twine (or floral wire wrapped in paper). Hot glue it to the front of the busted canvas.
