Why I love this craft
I love this Upcycled Spice Jar Christmas Ornament craft because it’s exactly the kind of project I’m always drawn to – simple, budget-friendly, and a clever way to repurpose something I’d normally toss.
With just a few basic supplies and a little creativity, I can turn empty spice jars into charming, handmade ornaments that feel cozy, personal, and totally unique. It’s the perfect mix of practical and festive, and honestly, I’m all about easy projects that bring a little extra joy to the holidays without a lot of fuss.
Why You Should Save Your Empty Spice Jars
Empty spice jars are one of those little household items that are just too good to throw away. They’re the perfect size for small crafts, easy to clean, and usually come with lids that make them even more versatile.
I love using them for upcycled projects like these ornaments because they’re sturdy, clear (so you can see all the cute details inside), and just the right size for mini winter scenes. Plus, giving new life to something I already have on hand not only saves money but also feels good—like I’m being a little more creative and a little less wasteful all at once.
The inspiration for this craft:
This Christmas craft is VERY similar to a previous snow globe craft that I made in a jar just a little bit bigger than these spice jars. I made a mini winter scenes in a glass jar.

DIY Upcycled Spice Jar Snow Globe Ornaments
Looking for a charming and easy holiday craft that’s budget-friendly and packed with personality? These upcycled spice jar snow globe ornaments are just the thing.
Materials
- Empty glass spice jars (with lids)
- Rust-Oleum Ultra Matte Spray Paint (I used Coastal Sage)
- White cardstock
- Mini bottle brush trees and small embellishments (like tiny deer)
- Epsom salt (for snow)
- Baker’s twine (red and white)
Tools
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
Instructions
- Watch the video. Follow along with the video for a step by step walkthrough on making your own snow globe ornaments.
- Prep your jars. I started with two empty spice jars. One of them had a green lid, which didn’t match my winter vision, so I gave it a quick couple of coats with Rust-Oleum Ultra Matte spray paint in Coastal Sage.

- Create the base scene. To make the little snowy scenes inside, I traced the top of the jar onto a piece of white cardstock. Cut the circles slightly smaller than the traced line so they’d fit inside the jar. You want them snug but able to slide in without bending too much.

- Build the scene. Using a hot glue gun, attach a mini deer and a small bottle brush tree to one cardstock circle and two tiny bottle brush trees to the other. Keep the embellishments small so they fit easily inside the jars.

- Add snow. Grab some Epsom salt and sprinkle enough into each jar to lightly cover the base.

- Add a little extra (optional). Add a tiny wreath to the lid of one of the jars. Use a dab of hot glue and press the little gold floss hanger into it.
- Make a hanger. Cut two lengths of twine—one longer, one shorter. Form a large loop with the longer piece (big enough to go over the jar lid). Tie a double knot on each side of the loop using the shorter piece. These knots will act as handles. Drape the loop over the jar and tighten. Make sure the short twine ends are even on both sides. Secure everything with a final double knot and trim the ends—or tie them in a little bow if you like!
