Why I love this craft
I’m all about quick, cute, and customizable crafts (especially around the holidays) and these acrylic ornaments totally check all the boxes. Whether you have a Cricut or not, this project gives you so much creative freedom.
You can go modern and minimal, meaningful and personalized, or playful and bright. I love how the bold text paired with soft chalk paint and velvet ribbon creates such a pretty contrast, and the fact that each one turns out a little different just adds to their charm.

Crafting with Acrylic Ornaments
Acrylic ornament blanks from Hobby Lobby are basically a crafter’s dream come true – clear, crisp, and ready for all the creative possibilities. I love how easy they are to personalize with vinyl, paint pens, scrapbook paper, or even faux snow for a little holiday magic.
They’re the perfect blank slate for DIY ornaments, gift tags, or even place settings if you’re feeling fancy. And because they come in so many fun shapes and sizes, it’s easy to whip up a batch of custom pieces that look straight out of a boutique (without the boutique price tag).
The inspiration for this craft:
If you’ve spent any time on my blog or YouTube Channel, then you know how much I enjoy making different types of Christmas ornaments. I don’t bust out my Cricut machine too often, but when I do, I always love the results – like when I made these DIY Modern Colorblock Christmas Ornaments.

Acrylic Christmas Ornaments
Looking for a quick, modern, and totally customizable Christmas craft? These DIY acrylic ornaments are the perfect project—whether you have a Cricut or not!
Materials
- Acrylic ornament blanks (found in multi-packs at Hobby Lobby)
- Black adhesive vinyl or rub-on transfers / paint pen
- Transfer tape (if using vinyl)
- Chalk paint (I used FolkArt Home Decor in "Sage")
- Velvet ribbon (I used teal, 10 inches per ornament)
Tools
- Cricut machine (optional), weeding tool
- Flat 1-inch paint brush + fine detail brush
- Scissors
Instructions
- Watch video. Follow along with the tutorial for a step by step walkthrough on how to make these acrylic Christmas ornaments.
- Create your design. Using Cricut Design Space, search for festive text like “Joy” or “Merry” and find some cute graphics to cut in black adhesive vinyl. (Don’t have a Cricut? No worries, you can use rub-on transfers from Dollar Tree or even handwrite your design with a black paint pen.)
- Transfer the design. Apply your vinyl letters or transfer your design onto the front of the acrylic ornament. Use transfer tape if you’re using adhesive vinyl.

- Paint the back. With a flat 1-inch brush, freehand a squiggly or abstract shape on the back side of the ornament to frame and contrast the front text.

- Let it dry and add a second coat. Let it dry and go back in with a smaller, fine-point brush for a second coat.

- Add the finishing touch. Thread a 10-inch piece of velvet ribbon through the top hole of the ornament and tie it in a knot. Cut the ends at a 45° angle for that clean, crisp finish.
