Looking for a budget-friendly Christmas craft? Make these charming yarn-wrapped star ornaments with just cardboard, yarn, and hot glue!

Materials

  • Scrap cardboard (a recycled box works perfectly!)
  • Yarn (mine was a neutral gray yarn from Dollar Tree)
  • Ribbon for bows (thin and regular width, one-sided or double-sided)
  • Faux berries or small embellishments
  • Star template (available as a printable PDF)
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Pencil or carbon transfer paper

Instructions

    1. Watch video. Follow along with the tutorial for a step by step walkthrough on how to make these Christmas ornaments.
    2. Transfer the Star Template. Start by printing your star template (or draw one freehand). You can transfer the two stars (one large and one small) onto cardboard two ways. Option 1: Scribble pencil over the back of the template, place it face-up on cardboard, and trace over it again. This transfers the pencil outline. Option 2: Use carbon transfer paper for a darker, crisper outline.
    3. Cut Out the Stars. Use sharp craft scissors to cut out the outer star shape. For the inner small star, switch to a craft knife and cutting mat. It might take a few passes to cut clean through.
Now you have two stars: a larger outline star and a smaller solid star.
    4. Attach the Yarn Hanger. Cut a small piece of yarn and knot it into a loop. Hot glue it to the back of each star as your ornament hanger.
    5. Wrap the Large Star. Use a small bundle of yarn (wrap it around your fingers 20–30 times) to make wrapping easier. Visually break the star into 5 points and 10 lines. Wrap yarn at a 90° angle to each “line.” Secure yarn with hot glue on the back as you go. As you reach a point, secure along the edges with hot glue, and make sure no cardboard shows. wrap cardboard star with yarn finish wrapping star with yarn and hot glue
    6. Wrap the Small Star. Cover the center first. Randomly wrap in different directions until the cardboard is hidden. Glue and trim the yarn tail. Then wrap the five points: start with a small glued yarn coil at the tip, then wrap down to the base.
    7. Embellish with Ribbons and Berries. You can finish your stars by hot gluing on mini bows and faux berries. Carefully heat seal the ribbon ends of the bows to prevent fraying.

And that’s it—your beautiful, handmade yarn-wrapped star ornaments are ready to hang! This project is the perfect way to upcycle cardboard while adding a cozy, homespun vibe to your holiday décor.

You can customize these with chunky yarns, metallic threads, or even rustic twine. Try different star sizes or color themes to suit your style or tree. They also make thoughtful, handmade gifts!
