Crafting with Dollar Tree Tumbling Tower Blocks

If you’re anything like me, you can’t walk into Dollar Tree without grabbing a box (or three) of Tumbling Tower blocks. They’re a craft supply staple—and for good reason! Today, I’m showing you how to turn those humble little wooden blocks into beautiful, rustic Christmas ornaments.

The inspiration for this craft:

I made Jenga block Christmas ornaments a few years ago, and they were wildly popular! But, those ornaments were painted. This time, I opted to stain the wood pieces for a different look.

Materials

  • 9 Tumbling Tower pieces (3 per ornament)
  • Small screw eyes (2 per ornament)
  • E6000 glue or wood glue
  • Wooden snowflake cutouts (or any festive embellishment)
  • White acrylic paint
  • Silver paint or Rub 'n Buff
  • Gel wood stain (in oak or your choice of color)
  • Baker’s Twine (or string of your choice)
  • Scrap parchment paper

Tools

  • Paintbrushes (1" flat and detail brush)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

    1. Watch the video. Follow along with the video for a step by step walkthrough on making your own tumbling tower ornaments.
    2. Prep Your Jenga Pieces. Start by selecting 9 Tumbling Tower pieces. These will be assembled in sets of three for each ornament. Take three of them and mark two equally-spaced dots on one end. If you’re lucky, you can twist the screw eyes directly into the wood after giving them a little tap with a hammer. If not, use a small nail to create a pilot hole first—no power tools needed for a project this size! add screw eyes and glue wood pieces together
    3. Glue the Ornament Base. Assemble your ornament base by gluing three Jenga pieces side by side. Use a tiny bit of E6000 glue—less is more here, or it’ll seep through the seams. Wood glue works too, but E6000 sets quickly and holds strong. Let them dry fully before moving on.
    4. Paint the Snowflakes. Paint the wooden snowflake cutouts with white paint. Use a circular motion with a flat brush to get into all the little crevices. Lay them on parchment paper to dry—this keeps them from sticking. Once dry, add a distressed silver touch with silver paint.
    5. Stain the Ornaments. Stain all sides of the wood ornaments. Set aside to dry.
    6. Add the Finishing Touches. Distress the edges of your ornaments with silver paint. Lightly run your brush across the outer edges and the front border for a rustic look. Then, attach your painted snowflake to the front of the ornament with a dab of hot glue.
    7. Add a Hanger. Cut about 8 inches of Baker’s Twine (or ribbon), thread each end through the screw eyes, and double-knot them in place.
