Why I love this craft:
I’m really into this colorblock trend. It’s everywhere – fashion, home decor, crafting. The idea is simple: two contrasting colors or tones. And while I may not be very adventurous with my fashion or home decor – I’m more than happy to give this trend a try with my crafting.
So here we are, on week 7 of my 25 crafts to Christmas countdown, and I’m ready to give this trend a try on some ornaments!
Where to buy unfinished wood ornaments
I bought my wood ornaments at JoAnn fabrics, really any craft store should carry them in the unfinished wood aisle. I’ve purchased them at Hobby Lobby or ordered online in the past as well.
Supplies Needed:
- unfinished wood ornaments – the ones I used had a 3.5-inch diameter
- wood stain – Americana Gel Stains in Oak
- acrylic craft paint – DecoArt Americana in Deep Midnight Blue, Warm White, Thicket, Deep Burgundy, Lamp (Ebony) Black
- masking tape
- nonstick scissors
- paint brushes
- white permanent adhesive vinyl
- Cricut machine and tools
- transfer tape
- twine or ribbon – to hang ornaments
FREE SVG files to make your own ornaments (click each button to download the file):
What fonts did you use? I want to make my own decals!
Sure thing. The two fonts are: Plantin Titling MT and Apricots.
Tutorial: How to Make DIY Colorblock Christmas Ornaments
Follow this quick video, or read the step-by-step directions below:
- Brush a light layer of gel stain over the entire ornament – beginning with the edges and then moving to the flat front surface. Set aside to dry. OPTIONAL: stain the back of the ornament as well.
- Upload your SVG file to Cricut Design Space, size appropriately for your ornament, and cut the design out on white permanent adhesive vinyl. Trim and weed the vinyl.
- Using your cut vinyl decal as your guide, decide where to place masking tape lines on the front of the ornament. Place one solid line, or cut the masking tape with nonstick scissors to create a thin line.
- Paint between the masking tape lines with paint color of your choosing. Be sure to paint away from the tape line to avoid bleed.
- Peel away the tape before the paint fully dries.
- Once the paint has dried, use transfer tape to add the vinyl decal to the ornament.
- Add twine or ribbon to hang the ornament.
Feel free to get creative with your paint color choice and placement of colorblock lines. The possibilities are just about endless.

HI, What do you suggest if you do not have a cricut machine?
Thank you.
Hi Vicky – you can trace the graphics (scribble on the back of the printed graphics with pencil OR use carbon tracing paper, and then trace onto the ornament) then go over with a white paint pen. It’s similar to the process in this post: https://thecrazycraftlady.com/christmas-scroll-sign/ Or you can search on Etsy for pre-cut vinyl decals.
Hi,
Enjoying all of your Christmas crafts and doing several of them!
What size are these ornaments? Didn’t realize there were so many different sizes!
Thanks again,
Lori

I love the wooden ornaments that you did the color block on. I would love to make these for a charity event, but am having difficulty downloading the SVGs onto my iPad. Do you have any advice? I don’t know how to download directly to my Cricut ( not even sure that can be done)
If you can download them into a downloads folder or onto a desktop, you can upload from there onto Cricut. Otherwise, you can type your own words with whatever font you like in Cricut.
Hi. Love these! Can I use regular stain (Minwax wood finish)- not the American Gel stain?
Thanks
Yep! Any stain will work.
