Why I love this craft
Craft projects that include trays have become one of my favorites because they are quick, easy, versatile, and inexpensive. I have made lots of them for just about every season and/or holiday.
What is the best paint to use on silver trays?
I like to use white Rust-oleum chalk paint with any project that requires a base coat, especially with textures like silver trays. It offers amazing coverage, dries fairly quickly, and creates the perfect finish that can easily be painted over.
I purchased a quart can because I use it so much!
The inspiration for this craft:
I’ve worked on several craft projects using trays like this Dollar Store Flower Decal Tray Embellished with Wall Stickers. I’ve used wall decals, stickers, and craft sticks, so it was a nice change to use a fall-themed napkin.

Fall Decoupage Tray Craft
Turn a silver Dollar Tree tray into beautiful table decor with this Fall Decoupage Tray Craft.
Materials
- small silver tray (Dollar Tree)
- white rust-oleum chalk paint
- Waverly chalk paint (color: yellow)
- mod podge
- fall-themed napkin
- parchment paper
- clear matte finishing spray
Tools
- scissors
- pencil
- mini heat press (or iron with NO steam)
Instructions
- Watch video. Follow along with the video tutorial for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to create your own fall decoupage tray.
- Prep the tray. Add a base coat of white rust-oleum chalk paint to the entire tray.
- Add coordinating color of paint. Paint 2-3 coats of whatever color paint that matches the napkin you'll be using for this craft. (I used yellow.) Let the paint dry between each coat.
- Apply mod podge. Add a generous coat of matte mod podge over the entire front of the tray. Let it dry completely.
- Prepare the napkin. Peel the napkin to remove the bottom layer. Lay the napkin flat on the tray. Use a pencil to trace over the ridges so the napkin fits on the flat part. Carefully cut out with craft scissors, rounding the corners. Dry fit and trim as necessary.
- Attach and seal the napkin. Use parchment paper and a mini heat press to attach the napkin to the tray. Start from the center and work your way out.
- Optional: weather the tray with an accent color of your choice. Watch the video to see how I did this. Another option to seal the napkin is to use another coat of mod podge or use a clear matte finishing spray.
The Finished Craft

My finished tray looks right at home with this little vignette of other fall crafts: a wood bead pumpkin, a mini pumpkin wreath, a fall book stack, and a fall mini canvas.
