How to make a patriotic 4th of July star wreath using a dollar store wreath form and mop heads.
Looking for a quick, affordable, and eye-catching way to decorate for Independence Day? This DIY star wreath is the perfect patriotic touch for your front door, porch, or party décor—and it’s made entirely from budget-friendly Dollar Store finds! With just a couple of mop heads, some simple paint, and a dash of creativity, you can craft a piece that looks boutique-worthy for just a few bucks.

Why I love this craft
Yarn can get quite expensive very quickly. By crafting with the strands of a dollar store mop head, you can create your own yarn… for under $3!
I know the strands of the mop head are white. But by using cheap dollar store acrylic craft paint and textile medium (you can find this at any craft store), you can dye these strands any color.

Instructions
- Watch the video tutorial before you begin to see how this craft came together.
- Disassemble mop heads. Pull the white strands out of the mop head base. They’ll tear free easily after the first few.
- Cut to length. Fold each mop strand into thirds and trim—about 7 in. per finished tassel. If using yarn: cut 7 in. lengths directly.

- Secure the White Base Layer. Fold one white strand in half, tuck the loop under a wire on your star frame, then pull the cut ends through to form a knot. Cover all sections: There are 10 wire segments (5 points × 2 per point). Attach 8 white tassels per segment (80 total) so the frame is completely hidden.

- Dye Your Strands Red & Blue. Wet additional mop strands, wring until damp.In a gallon‑size Ziploc bag combine: a splash of water and equal parts acrylic paint + textile medium. (Tip: Add a touch of blue to your red mix for a deeper, less “orangey” hue.) Seal strands in the bag, massage until evenly coated. Spread on parchment or a protected surface; let dry (overnight or in sun). Repeat separately for blue.

- Add the blue outer layer. Flip the white tassels outward to expose the outer ring.Attach 9 blue tassels per segment, looping from center out for best coverage (90 total).

- Add the red inner layer. Flip white back into place. Attach 4 red tassels per segment inside the white ring (40 total).
- Fill any gaps. Tuck extra red, white, or blue strands where the metal ribs peek through for perfect fullness.

- Create a Mini Pallet Sign. Cut 3 scrap paint‑stick pieces to pallet shape; hot‑glue a scrap piece of paint stick to the back, forming a mini pallet sign.

- Paint “USA”. Sketch letters in pencil. Paint with a ¼″ brush using blue paint; once dry, add white polka dots with a fine point paintbrush.

- Add greenery & hanger. Hot‑glue faux greenery sprigs behind one side of the sign. Secure baker’s twine to the back for hanging, then tie onto your wreath frame.

- Fluff & Finish. Gently separate and fluff tassel ends so they all face forward.
