Why I love this craft

I have some flower arrangements in big pots in front of my home and this patriotic stake craft would be the perfect piece of decor to show my American spirit.

Should you seal an outdoor craft project?

You’ll notice at the end of the video tutorial, I seal the finished craft with a coat of mod podge. I mention that this is optional because some people like the natural wear an outdoor craft gets. So it’s totally up to you whether or not you’d like to seal yours.

Materials

  • unfinished wooden rectangle (Dollar Tree) or just a scrap of wood
  • painters tape
  • white rustoleum chalk paint
  • folkart matte paint (color: cloudy day and cardinal red)
  • paint stir stick
  • 3 wooden stars
  • E6000 glue
  • mod podge clear coat

Instructions

  1. Watch the video. Follow the tutorial for a step by step walkthrough on how to make your own patriotic garden stake craft.
  2. Paint the wood plank white. Apply a piece of painter's tape around the wood about a third from the top. Paint a coat of white rustoleum chalk paint below the tape. Peel off the tape. paint bottom third of wood with white paint
  3. Paint the wood plank blue. Paint the remaining wood with a coat of paint in the color rainy day. I did mix a slightly darker blue to make it darker. Let it dry completely. paint top third of wood piece with blue paint
  4. Paint red stripes. Watch the video to see how I taped off sections before painting the red stripes. Paint in the direction of the paint lines. Peel off the tape while the red paint is still wet. use blue tape to paint red stripes
  5. Paint the stir stick. Paint the stir stick white as well as 3 wooden stars. Let them dry completely. paint wood stars with white paint
  6. Create a rustic look. Use a sanding block to distress the wood plank. Use a Clorox wipe to wipe away any sand. use sandpaper to distress the whole project
  7. Attach the wooden stars. Secure the stars in the blue painted section with E6000 glue.
  8. Secure the stake. (Optional) cut the bottom of the paint stir stick at a 45 degree angle to create a "stake." Secure it to the back of the wood plank with E6000 glue.
  9. Seal the stake. Apply a generous coat of mod podge to protect the surface.
