Why I love this craft

I love to make all kinds of signs, but the ones using the bamboo cutting boards from Dollar Tree are some of my favorites. I really like how the detail came out on this one, using just black chalk paint and a fine tip paint brush.

How to Use the “Famous” Heat-Press Method

When it comes to attaching any type of paper to a wood surface, my go-to method is the mod podge and heat press method. You’ll me say it time and time again in my tutorial videos, “Apply a generous coat of mod podge to the entire surface and allow it to dry completely. One dried, lay the paper over the surface, followed by a piece of parchment paper, and use a mini heat press to activate the mod podge and secure the paper.”

If you don’t have a mini heat press, you can always use an iron minus the steam.

The inspiration for this craft:

I’ve made a few “faux enamelware” crafts using black and white chalk paint – like this Christmas pie pan craft – so I knew the technique would work on a mini sign.

  • bamboo cutting board (Dollar Tree)
  • bathroom decal, cut on black adhesive vinyl
  • rustoleum chalk paint (white)
  • black chalk paint
  • wire
  • 2 small screw eyes

Tools

  • 1" flat paint brush
  • fine tip paint brush
  • pin vise tool
  • wire cutters

Instructions

  1. Watch the video. Follow along with the video for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to make your own hanging sign.
  2. Paint a basecoat. Apply a coat of white rustoleum chalk paint to the entire board. Add a second coat if necessary. Let it dry between coats.
  3. Print sign design on Cricut. Follow the dimensions mentioned in the video. Transfer the decal onto a piece of transfer tape.
  4. Apply the decal to the sign. Transfer the decal using a smoothing tool.
  5. Create pinholes. Use a pinvise tool to make two pilot holes in the top of the bamboo cutting board.
  6. Install eyehooks. Screw an eyehook into each hole.
  7. Embellish with a black border. Paint all the way around the edge of the cutting board, including the eyehooks. To get the enamelware effect, use wavy lines and add splotches on black paint on the front of the sign.
  8. Add hanger. Use a piece of wire and thread it through the eyehooks, using a simple twist to secure.
