THESE GOLD LEAF CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS TAKE JUST A FEW SUPPLIES TO MAKE.
Gold leaf Christmas ornaments are the perfect way to decorate a cute mini Christmas tree or even tie together to make a unique ornament garland. In fact, my daughter has actually claimed these for her personal tree this year!
I really enjoy a unique ornament, like these Decoupage Ornaments with Wood Rounds and Napkins. It’s easy to go out and buy the Christmas ball ornaments, but there’s something special when you hand craft your own ornaments. This craft project allows you to do just that.
WHY I LOVE THIS PROJECT
So, I found myself down the dollar finds aisle at Target – which I technically shouldn’t do alone – but that’s where I came across these really cool unfinished wood light bulb ornaments.
They are basically a blank canvas, so you can do pretty much anything with them. Looking at them, I decided to bust out the gold leaf and get kind of crafty with that. Although I will say that gold leaf has risen to the level of glitter for me when it comes to the mess factor. So I’m not sure I’ll do much more with it. But for this project, I was really excited about how everything turned out.
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Wooden Light Bulb Ornaments – I found mine at Target in the dollar spot, but you can find similar ones online as well, try these ornaments or these ones
- Acrylic Paint (midnight blue, lamb (or ebony) black, and snow (or titanium) white)
- Gold Leaf Adhesive or Mod Podge – I used matte for this project
- Gold Leaf
- Masking Tape
- 2 Paintbrushes
- Paint Tray (optional for drying ornaments)
TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE GOLD LEAF CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS
Follow this quick video, or read the step-by-step directions below:
- Cover the twine hangers (if you have them) by lightly wrapping them in masking tape.
- Paint your ornaments the color of your choice. I wanted mine to be more modern and neutral so I used black, white, and navy blue.
- Begin applying the gold leaf with gold leaf adhesive or Mod Podge. Wherever you put adhesive is where you’ll want to place the gold leaf. Use a dry paintbrush to gently brush off the excess gold leaf.
- Keep adding adhesive and gold leaf until you get your desired level of coverage and look.
- Once the adhesive has dried, use a dry brush to gently brush the ornaments again to remove any excess gold leaf flakes.
- Remove the masking tape to reveal the twine hanger underneath. And that’s it! Your ornaments are ready to be used.
** TIP: For easy drying, set the ornaments into a paint tray. You can also hang them up to dry.
