Why I love this craft
Fall is such a beautiful time of the year and this type of craft project really brings out the rustic side of the season. I like being able to take contrasting materials and combine them to make something that is unique, budget-friendly, and fits right in with my decor style.
Where to purchase embroidery hoops?
I purchased the hoop I used in this craft in a 4-pack from Amazon; however, sometimes you can land them at Dollar Tree. They’re also available at other craft stores like Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, and Joann’s.
The inspiration for this craft:
I’ve cut Dollar Tree foam pumpkins in half before – and back in 2021, I made this super cute Fall Reverse Canvas.
This time, instead of using a stretched canvas for the back of my project, I decided to use an oval embroidery hoop.

Pumpkin Embroidery Hoop Sign
Add this cute Pumpkin Embroidery Hoop Sign to your fall decor using just a few Dollar Store materials.
Materials
- Orange Styrofoam pumpkin, from Dollar Tree
- Folkart Matte Paint (color: mossy meadow, linen, and olive green)
- Oval embroidery ring
- Foam board
- Drop cloth fabric piece
- Styrofoam ball
- Faux greenery
- Faux burgundy stems
Instructions
- Watch tutorial video. Follow along with the video for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to create your own pumpkin embroidery hoop sign.
- Prep the pumpkin. Start by cutting along the seam of the foam pumpkin to cut it in half. You'll only need half of it for this craft.
- Paint the pumpkin. Start with a solid base coat of the in-between green color (mossy meadow). Let it dry completely (approx 30 minutes).
- Add texture detail. I did this by adding another layer of the in-between color, then brushed the ridges with the linen and olive green colors. Let the pumpkin dry completely.
- Create a backing for the embroidery ring. Trace the embroidering ring onto a piece of foam board and cut out. Once it's cut out, pop it into the ring of the embroidery hoop. Secure it with a bit of hot glue.
- Add drop cloth. Cut out a rectangular section of drop cloth and place it over the front of the embroidery hoop. Smooth and secure it with the outer ring of the hoop. Once smoothed, secure it with hot glue (on the back). Fold the edges over as you add the hot glue. Trim off any excess drop cloth.
- Fill the Pumpkin. Attach the styrofoam ball inside of the halved pumpkin with a generous amount of hot glue. Cut out a notch at the top of the pumpkin. Attach the faux greenery and burgundy stems by sticking them down into the styrofoam ball.
- Assemble. Add a generous amount of hot glue to the edge of the halved pumpkin and attach it to the front of the embroidery hoop.
- Hang. Hang your new pumpkin embroidery hoop sign wherever you'd like.
Notes
Save the other half of the pumpkin for another craft project.
