Why I love this craft
I don’t work with velvet a lot; however, I liked how this craft turned out. The shininess of the velvet paired with the homemade pumpkin stem (made out of twisted jute rope) made for a unique contrast and look.
Is velvet easy to craft with?
I think it depends on how you will be using the velvet. In the case of creating these velvet pumpkins, it was pretty easy to work with. Unlike my ribbon pumpkins, I had to utilize hot glue to make the ribbon stay in place and secured.
The inspiration for this craft:
Creating my Dollar Store DIY Ribbon Pumpkins gave me inspiration to make these velvet pumpkins. I used the same technique, just with a different type of ribbon. I also got the opportunity to utilize a new and unique way to make pumpkin stems (using twine).

DIY Velvet Pumpkins
These DIY Velvet Pumpkins are sleek, shiny, and beautiful - made with just a few craft supplies.
Materials
- Styrofoam pumpkin
- velvet ribbon (3 yards)
- twine
- Americana gel stain (color: oak)
- mod podge
- faux greenery
Tools
- pen blade (exacto knife)
- hot glue gun
- scissors
- flat 1" paint brush
Instructions
- Watch the video. Follow along with the step-by-step tutorial to learn how to make your own DIY velvet pumpkins.
- Prepare the pumpkin. Start by using a pen blade to remove the stem part of the pumpkin and create a hole. Create another hole in the bottom of the pumpkin.
- Measure. Use a tape measure to measure top to bottom. I measured nine and a quarter inches. Cut about 11 strips to that length.
- Attach ribbon. Begin securing strips of velvet in intervals with dabs of hot glue at the top and bottom of the pumpkin. Be sure to pinch the ribbon, so it lays better against the contours of the pumpkins. Tuck the ribbon ends into the holes at the top and bottom of the pumpkin.
- Cut twine for the pumpkin stems. Wrap twine around your fingers several times until you get a good bunch. Cut and paint with brown paint. Let dry.
- Make the pumpkin stems. Cut the twine string down into shorter lengths and apply a generous amount of mod podge. Twist the bundle into a stem shape. Secure it to a hard surface with tape to dry.
- Embellish the pumpkin top. Once dried, hot glue the stem to the pumpkin along with a piece of faux greenery. Attach a ribbon for a finished look.
The Finished Craft
These pumpkins match my fall decor perfectly! I styled them on our coffee table with a cookie sheet decorative tray that I made earlier this year.
