Make your own straw hat wreath with just a few supplies and this easy step-by-step tutorial.

I came across this idea on Pinterest and wanted to have a go at making one. I added a slight twist and love the way it came out.

There are many spring wreath inspirations from the Dollar Store, including making this straw hat door hanger. Since they continue to update their craft and seasonal decor selection of items, the possibilities are pretty much endless.

WHY I LOVE THIS PROJECT:

I love this project because it’s unique, is pretty easy to make, and leaves plenty of room for creative versatility. As you’ll see below, I took the embroidery route when creating the word design for my wreath. However, you can use a variety of things to create your designs.

Not to mention, you can also choose different flowers, flower colors, greetings, words, ribbons, and the like. This is a craft project that you can use for inspiration but totally do your own thing.

TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE A SUN HAT WREATH

Watch this quick video tutorial, and then follow the step-by-step tutorial below:

  1. Watch the video above before you begin, and let that be your visual guide for this craft.
  2. Start by removing the tag and ribbon from the sun hat.
  3. Using a pencil, lightly sketch out the design you’d like to put on your sun hat. I sketched the word hello with a flying bumblebee.
  4. Trace over your sketch with a Sharpie to help when it’s time to add the stitches (embroidery).
  5. Using an embroidery needle and black thread, begin to stitch along your sketch until complete.
  6. Snip the wildflowers from their base, leaving a bit of the stem.
  7. Apply hot glue to the back of the leaves and press it onto the hat. Choose a space where the stem can go through a hole in the hat.
  8. Repeat this process until about a third to a half of the hat is covered in flowers.
  9. Wrap a strip of ribbon around the head of the hat, hot gluing it in place, then tie it off with a knot.
  10. Optional: add an additional bow using 3 lengths of the yellow ribbon and 2 lengths of black and white check ribbon, cut at a 45-degree angle. Stack the pieces and tie them off in the middle with another piece of yellow ribbon folded into thirds and hot glued. Secure the bow over the knot with hot glue.

** TIP: If you do not want to do the embroidery method, you can use a thicker Sharpie and/or paint pen to create a similar look.

***NOTE: If using the embroidery method, try not to poke your needle through the large holes in the hat. This will cause the thread to move around in the gap. Try to punch through the solid surfaces to get the thread to go exactly where you want it to go.
