Why I love this craft
If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, then you know how much I like the farmhouse and nautical themes. So when I saw this unique way to easily create a jute rope bowl, I had to give it a try.
Turns out I only needed a couple of supplies because I already had everything else on hand!
What’s the best way to secure jute rope?
For this project, and most others that use jute rope, a generous amount of hot glue will typically bind it together nicely and securely. I also use a generous amount of Pod Podge, which also acts as an additional binding agent.

Nautical jute rope is such a versatile and beautiful craft supply. And there are so many ways you can use it to create decor for your home. I grab lots of inspiration from roundup of Creative DIY Rope Crafts to Try.

Jute Rope Bowl
This Jute Rope Bowl is the perfect do it yourself decor to enhance the farmhouse or nautical theme in your home.
Materials
- jumbo plastic bowl (Dollar Tree)
- plastic wrap
- mod podge
- jute rope
- old book, or other decorative paper
Tools
- 1" paint brush
- heavy duty craft scissors
- fine point hot glue gun
Instructions
- Watch tutorial video. Follow along with the tutorial video for a step-by-step walkthrough to create your own jute rope bowl.
- Cover the bowl. Turn the bowl face down and cover it with three pieces of plastic wrap in all directions. Smooth down.
- Apply Mod Podge. Use a paint brush to apply a generous coat of mod podge over the plastic-covered bowl.
- Apply the jute rope. Cut the tape covered end off of the rope. Apply hot glue to the cut end and begin to make a coil. Once you get it coiled a few times, place it on the center of the bowl with the mod podge.
- Continue coiling. Once you've set the coil on the mod podge, continue hot gluing and coiling until you've used 2 packages of jute rope. To marry the two rope ends between packages, cut both rope ends at a 45-degree angle and the glue together.
- Mark the center line. Use a piece of masking tape to mark a center point. This will be where you make the handles. On your final coil around the bowl, make a 6-inch section of rope pop out about an inch to form a handle. (Watch the video to see how I did this.)
- Set aside to dry. I recommend allowing this to dry overnight.
- Remove the bowl. Peel the jute rope bowl off of the plastic bowl and remove the plastic wrap.
- Decorate the inside of the bowl. I used pages of an old book to decorate the inside. Use a generous amount of mod podge and ripped pieces of paper to create a unique look. Allow this to dry completely before using the bowl.
