Why I love this craft
This craft is a great way to upcycle an old jar and create a super cute summer lantern. If you tried the storage tub upscale, then you should have leftover placemat ribbon that can be used with craft project. Depending on what you already have on hand, this craft will cost nothing!
What hot glue gun do I use?
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the hot glue gun I use, so I thought I’d link it here. It has an ergonomic detail tip, which makes precision gluing easier. Also, having the lever on top makes it better when holding it.

Dollar Store Placemat Jar Upcycle
Grab an old jar and add a spring touch to your home with this Dollar Store Placemat Jar Upcycle.
Materials
- blue placemat (Dollar Tree) or leftover placemat ribbon from the storage tub upcycle craft
- jar
- hot glue
Tools
- hot glue gun
- scissors
Instructions
- Watch the video. Follow the tutorial to make a placemat jar upcycle.
- Prep jar. Remove the label from the jar. Use goo gone to clean off any sticky residue. Use rubbing alcohol to remove the date.
- Disassemble one placemat. Use a pair of scissors to break the seam and unwrap one placemat. Remove the fishline-type string from the placemat.
- Hot glue ribbon. Hot glue the ribbon around the jar. Only do a few rows.
- Embellish. Add wall decal stickers to decorate the area above the placemat ribbon. Add one row of placemat ribbon around the top rim of the jar.
- Add candle. Add a candle to make a cute summer lantern.
