Why I love this craft
If you’ve spent any amount of time on my blog or YouTube Channel, then you’re most likely already familiar with my love for reverse canvas crafts. I’ve been asked why I prefer to use a canvas versus a frame and the answer is simple.
I enjoy crafting with canvas and they can create some pretty cool looking craft projects.

What is the best way to remove canvas from the frame?
Since the beginning of my reverse canvas journey, I’ve settled on using a pen blade as one of the safest and convenient ways to remove the canvas from the frame.

Some people call the pen blade an Xacto knife, craft knife, or like to use a pair of sharp craft scissors to score along the edge of the canvas frame. Regardless of what you like to use, you’ll want something that is sharp enough to cut canvas.
The inspiration for this craft:
I’ve completed so many reverse canvas crafts, it’s hard to choose just one. However, this Faux Shiplap Christmas Sign is the closest when it comes to using letters as part of the design.

Materials
- 8x10 stretched canvas (Dollar Tree)
- wooden half balls
- wood glue
- XOXO transfer (Cricut)
- mod podge
- Rustoleum chalk paint (color: white)
- Decoart Americana acrylic craft paint (color: deep burgundy and blush pink)
Tools
- pen blade
- Sharpie
- scissors
- fine point paint brush
- 1" flat paint brush
Instructions
- Watch video tutorial. Follow along with the video for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to create your XOXO canvas.
- Remove the canvas. Use a pen blade to safely remove the canvas from the wood frame. Remove excess from the frame as well.
- Cut down canvas. Use a black sharpie and the frame to trace and trim down the canvas piece. It should fit perfectly onto the back of the frame.
- Dry fit wood balls. Begin dry fitting half wood balls around the border of the frame.
- Attach half wood balls. Use a fine point paint brush and wood glue to attach the wood balls to the frame.
- Paint the canvas piece. Attach the canvas to a paintable surface. Apply the XO transfer (I used my Cricut) to the canvas.
Paint a solid coat of mod podge over the entire canvas. - Paint the frame. Apply a coat of white rustoleum chalk paint onto the frame. Allow the first coat to dry completely and then apply an additional coat.
- Paint the canvas and transfer. Apply two shades of paint. I used burgundy and blush pink. Do not let the paint fully dry before removing the XO transfers.
- Assemble the canvas and frame. Attach the canvas to the frame using a generous amount of hot glue.
