Why I love this Dollar Store Valentine’s Day Craft:
This project was inspired by a craft project that I made last year. And I will openly admit that this decision was 100% influenced by the fact that last year’s Valentine craft is going gang busters THIS year. I keep getrting notifications from YouTube about comments on the video, and it’s actually my top-viewed video for the past month.
What is this video I speak of? Here you go:
totally unrelated side note: I can’t believe how much my hair has grown in the past 12 months, lol!! Just watch the intro minute to each video to see what I’m talking about.
I made these three heart wreath last year:
And I applied the same basic craft style to two of the topiaries in this craft. I figured, hey! If it worked last year on that craft, it will work again this year on this craft. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Right?
Dollar Tree Valentine Craft – Heart Topiaries on TWO Styles
Follow this video tutorial, or read the step-by-step directions below:
Valentine Heart Topiary #1 – FLORAL HEARTS
Supplies (makes 2 topiaries):
- 2 large foam hearts – from DT seasonal section
- pink acrylic craft paint – I used light pink and dark pink
- paint brush
- parchment paper
- 12 bunches of faux roses in pink, light pink, and blush – from DT seasonal or floral section
- hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- 2 galvanized buckets – from DT floral section
- 2 small blocks craft foam – from DT floral section
- craft shears
- 2 12-inch wood dowels – craft store
- shredded kraft paper filler – craft store
- 2 packets of moss stones – DT floral section
Tutorial – How to make Floral Heart Topiary
- Paint the large foam hearts using both shades of pink paint. Set on parchment paper to let dry.
- Pluck the flowers off the stems. Apply a large dot of hot glue to the foam surface. Press the flower into the foam – the little plastic stem piece will stick into the foam, and the hot glue will hold it in place long-term.
- Fill in any gaps with leaves, secured with hot glue.
- Trim down the foam block to fit into the galvanized bucket. Secure the bottom with hot glue.
- Stick one end of the wood dowel into the foam block. Stick the other end into the bottom of the foam heart. Secure both ends with hot glue.
- Fill the bucket with shredded kraft paper and moss stones.
- Repeat the steps above to make a second heart topiary.
Valentine Heart Topiary #2 – HEART PICKS + FUZZY MOPHEAD
Supplies (makes 2 topiaries):
- 2 small clay pots – DT floral section
- paint brush
- white chalk paint
- craft foam – DT floral section
- scissors – heavy duty craft shears and fabric scissors
- 2 heart floral picks – DT seasonal section
- 1 white fuzzy mophead cover – DT cleaning section
Tutorial – How to make Dollar Store Heart Topiary
- Using a very dry brush, lightly paint the clay pot with white paint. Let most of the clay surface poke through, so it has a weathered look.
- Cut a piece of foam, and stick it into the clay pot.
- Stick the hear floral pick into the craft foam piece.
- Cut the mop head cover into three long strips. Trim off about 3/4 of one strip, and secure this piece on top of the craft foam block with hot glue.
- Repeat the steps above to make a second heart topiary.
