Why I love this craft

I love unique storage solutions so I knew this craft project would be right up my alley (and maybe yours, too). Each time I use these mini crates, I’m always amazed by how much you can do with them.

Stain and Glue 3 Dollar Store Mini Wood Crates

Benefits of crafting with mini wood crates.

I must say that the mini wood crates from Dollar Tree are one of my favorite materials to work with. Whether you are using a single one to make a light box or purchasing several to make a centerpiece, this supply gives you a good bang for your buck.

They are easy to paint, stain, seal, and drill into. And you’ll also notice that there are many different ways to use these crates. The wood is thin; however, it’s easy to make it durable.

The inspiration for this craft:

Although I haven’t made a craft quite like this before, I have dabbled with creating decor like this Dollar Store Flower Crate Craft. I’m excited to use these boxes coupled with hooks for added storage options. I’ve also used these EXACT hooks to make a DIY Paint Stick Key Holder.

Materials

  • 3 mini wood crates (Dollar Tree)
  • eye hooks
  • wood glue
  • hot glue
  • tumbling tower blocks (6)
  • Americana gel stain (color: oak)

Tools

  • small paint brush
  • ruler
  • pen
  • pin vice tool

Instructions

  1. Watch tutorial video. Follow along with the video for a step-by-step walkthrough on how to make your own wood crate hooks.
  2. Add reinforcements to the crates. Attach 2 tumbling tower blocks into each crate using wood glue.
  3. Measure spots for hooks. Use a ruler and pen to mark where the hooks will attach on the bottom of the crates. Make sure it aligns with where you placed the wood blocks.
  4. Add holes in the bottom of the crates. Use a pin vice to create holes in the marks made on the bottom of each crate.
  5. Screw in the hooks. Screw eye hooks into each hole created in the bottom of the crate.
  6. Stain the crates. Stain every side of the crate except for the sides that will touch. Allow it all to dry completely.
  7. Attach the crates. Glue everything together with wood glue and a tiny bit of wood glue to create a shelf and hanging accessory.
