Clothespins have long been used for a variety of things. Most people see them and think of hang-drying clothes outside, but the crafter can see a world of possibilities.

I use them to make some santa hat ornaments and others have used them to make some pretty cool wreaths to hang on their front door. There are many things you can do with these cute orbs! Keep reading for a few ideas.

WHY I LOVE THIS PROJECT

I love this project mostly because it is inexpensive to create. Since all of the supplies come from the Dollar Tree, I don’t have to invest as much. Secondly, I love the simplicity of making them.

And last but not least, you can get pretty creative with these. Whether you decide to make a lot or a little, you can switch up the colors, hang them for a summer party, or use them as decoration in your home (think filling an empty spot on a bookshelf).

TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE A CLOTHESPIN ORB

Follow this quick step-by-step tutorial below:

  1. Remove the metal spring from 18 full size and 18 medium wooden clothespins for each size 3D Star.  Disassemble the clothespins
  2. Attach all 18 clothespins together flat side to flat side with a glue gun and glue sticks.
  3. Use 8 of the full size clothespins for the 3D Star middle, arranging them flat on your work surface in a star pattern. Attach the clothespins together at the “heads” with a glue gun and glue sticks, using the photo as your guide.
  4. Glue 4 full size clothespins at the “head” in every other blank space that are in between the star points. Use a generous amount of hot glue and hold each clothespin in place until the glue sets. Then attach the 5th clothespin in the center, perpendicular to the work surface. Hotglue clothespins together
  5. Flip the 3D Star over on your work surface and repeat the above steps, attaching four full size clothespins in every other blank space, and the 5th one in the center. The 3D Star might be a bit wobbly for this step, so you can place it in a wide mouth jar or can for stability while gluing.
  6. Repeat the above steps to complete a 3D Star using the medium size wooden clothespins. Paint the clothespins brown
  7. Mix dark brown acrylic craft paint with some water on a paper plate. Roughly and quickly paint the full size 3D Star with the watered down paint mixture, making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies. This will give the unfinished wooden clothespins a stained effect without having to use messy stain.
  8. You can either leave the 3D Star dark brown or wipe off some of the excess paint with a wet paper towel or baby wipe before it dries completely. Repeat with the medium size 3D Star. Set aside to allow the paint to dry completely.

***Tip: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you’ll have to wait for it to dry.
