Grab a few thrift store wicker baskets and some spray paint to totally transform the look and make these decorative storage spray paint wicker baskets.
How to paint thrift store wicker baskets
When these two little baskets made their way into my craft room, I knew I could use them for storage. The problem: I didn’t LOVE the look. The stain on them was just a bit too dark for my taste.
So, in typical fashion, I went the upcycle route and transformed these baskets using spray paint.
DIY Spray Paint Wicker Baskets
Supplies you’ll need:
- baskets
- spray paint
- masking tape
- scrap paper
Gather your supplies in a well-ventilated area.
Tape off any area of the basket that you do NOT want to get paint on. In this case, I taped off the center stripe and the fabric liner inside the basket.
Then spray your basket.
The key here is light, even coats. You can always go back and add another coat. You can’t take one away!
Since I wasn’t aiming for complete coverage (I wanted a bit of the original basket color to peek through for a more distressed feel) this was particularly important.
When the paint is still a bit tacky, you can peel away the masking tape at an angle.
Once the first color had dried, I taped off the basket once again to get coverage on that center stripe.
You guys, this DIY upcycle project was seriously TOO easy. And now I have two cute new (to me) baskets for storage in my craft room!
Hello, great post. I was wondering what colors you used? I’ll be trying this out on a few baskets and want to use the same colors. Thank you!
