Why I love this craft
This craft is a great way to upscale a sign made during a different season. Not only did I turn a placemat into summer fruit decor, but I also turned a spring sign into a summer one – if you want to learn more about this process, I wrote a whole blog post about how to re-use seasonal signs over and over again.
What hot glue gun do I use?
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the hot glue gun I use, so I thought I’d link it here. It has an ergonomic detail tip, which makes precision gluing easier. Also, having the lever on top makes it better when holding it.

The inspiration for this craft:
I was inspired by the red and blue placemats I saw at the dollar store. This craft is part of a series I just released, 4 NEW Dollar Store Placement Crafts and DIYs. So pick up a handful of placemats and give them a try!

Instructions
- Watch video. Follow along with the tutorial for a step by step walkthrough on how to make your own placemat watermelon craft.
- Paint the placemat. Paint the 2nd row of the placemat with white rustoleum chalk paint.

- Paint the border. Paint a check pattern in light and dark green around the rim of the placemat.
- Add a coat of mod podge. Paint the other side with a generous coat of mod podge. Let it dry completely. This will help keep the placemat from fraying when you cut it.

- Cut a piece of foam board. Use a penblade and a cutting mat to cut the foamboard to fit just inside the frame.

- Wrap the foam board. Wrap the foam board in decorative paper.
- Cut the placemat. Cut out the watermelon and into slices.

- Assemble the sign. Attach watermelon slices to the sign with hot glue. Add cutout words with contact paper.

- Add Seeds. Use a fine point pain brush to add "seeds" to the watermelon slices with black paint.

- Embellish. Add a scrap ribbon bow. Hot glue the bow to the sign.
