How to make star wreath clips with a firework decoupage finish to decorate for the 4th of July
If you’re anything like me, you love decorating for every season, but you don’t necessarily love storing a dozen different wreaths! That’s exactly why I love these DIY patriotic wreath clips. They’re quick, inexpensive, and make it incredibly easy to transform an everyday wreath into festive Fourth of July decor.

This project uses simple wooden star cutouts, patriotic napkins, and mini clothespins to create removable decorations that clip right onto your wreath. Swap them out with the seasons and you’ll never need to buy another holiday wreath again!
DIY Patriotic Star Wreath Clips
Transform a plain wreath into festive Fourth of July decor with these DIY patriotic wreath clips. Made with wooden stars, Dollar Tree napkins, and mini clothespins, they're easy to swap out for every season.
Materials
- Wooden star cutouts (approximately 2 inches wide)
- Patriotic fireworks paper napkins
- Matte Mod Podge
- Mini wooden clothespins
- E6000 glue
Tools
- Paintbrush for Mod Podge
- Scissors
- Mini heat press or household iron (no steam)
- Parchment paper
- Nail file or small sanding block
Instructions
- Watch the video. Follow along with the video tutorial for a step-by-step walkthrough of how to make your own 4th of July star wreath clips.
- Apply Mod Podge. Begin by covering one side of each wooden star cutout with a generous coat of Mod Podge. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely before moving on to the next step. This dry layer will act as the adhesive when heat is applied later.

- Prepare the Napkins. Cut squares from your patriotic napkins that are slightly larger than the wooden stars. Separate the printed top layer from the backing layers. If you're having trouble, place a small piece of masking tape on both sides of the napkin and gently pull apart. Tip: Avoid using the folded seam sections of the napkin for the smoothest results.

- Heat Press Napkin Pieces. Place the printed napkin square over the dried Mod Podge-covered star. Cover with parchment paper and apply heat using a mini heat press or a household iron with the steam turned off. The heat reactivates the dried Mod Podge underneath, bonding the napkin to the wood and creating a beautifully smooth finish. Repeat for all of your wooden stars.
- Remove Excess Napkin. Once all of the stars are covered, it's time to clean up the edges. Use a nail file to remove the excess napkin around each star. Important: Only file downward. File down, lift the file, and repeat. Avoid sawing back and forth, which can pull up the napkin and damage your decoupage.

- Smooth the Surface. After filing the edges, give each star one final pass with the heat press or iron. This helps ensure all edges are fully adhered and creates an extra smooth finish.
- Add the Clothespins. Apply a couple of small dabs of E6000 glue to one side of a mini clothespin. Attach the clothespin to the back of each wooden star and allow the glue to cure fully. Once dry, your patriotic wreath clips are ready to use!

Notes
Tips for Success
* Use two napkins instead of trying to work around folded seams.
* Always use parchment paper between your heat source and napkin.
* Let the Mod Podge dry completely before applying heat.
* File downward only to prevent lifting the napkin edges.
* Make several sets in different themes for year-round decorating.
How to Use Your Wreath Clips
These clips are perfect for attaching to an everyday greenery wreath. Simply clip them around the wreath and add a coordinating bow for a quick seasonal refresh.
I used mine on a simple fern wreath that hangs on my front door year-round. Earlier this spring, I decorated it with carrot wreath clips. Now, with a quick swap to these patriotic stars, it’s ready for summer and the Fourth of July!
The best part? No storing multiple bulky wreaths. Just keep a small container of seasonal wreath clips and switch them out whenever the mood strikes.
