Why I love this craft
If you’ve ever dreamed of a Christmas tree collar that looks like it came straight from The Little Drummer Boy songbook, this DIY is for you! We’re turning a basic concrete form tube into a vintage-style drum collar using just fabric, ribbon, and hot glue.
Crafting with a Cardboard Concrete Form Tube
When I set out to make a unique Christmas tree collar, I stumbled across a surprising solution in the most unlikely of places—the concrete aisle at Home Depot. I picked up one of those giant cardboard concrete form tubes (you’ll usually find them near the lumber and cement), which are typically used to pour footings for decks and fences.
But with a little creativity, I turned that $24 construction material into four completely different tree collars! These tubes are lightweight, sturdy, easy to cut, and come in a size that compliments most trees (watch my full video to see how to make a narrower tree base, if needed). With just a utility knife, some paint or fabric, and a few embellishments, you can totally transform a plain old jumbo cardboard tube into a festive tree collar that matches your holiday style.

- 16" diameter concrete form tube (cut to 16" tall)
- Green fabric, 1.5 yards will easily cover
- Glue stick (school glue type)
- Duct tape
- Cream & gold wired ribbon (3 yards)
- Gold-accented jute cord (3 yards)
- Small wooden half balls (15 mm)
- Antique Gold Rub ’n Buff
Tools
- Hot glue gun
- Craft scissors
- Optional: rotary cutter and cutting mat, for fabric. Or else just use scissors.
Instructions
- Watch the video. Follow along with the video for a walkthrough on how to make your own drum inspired Christmas tree collar.
- Cut Your Tube. Use a utility knife to carefully score and slice the concrete tube to 16" high.
Wrap with Fabric. Apply glue stick generously and wrap the tube with green fabric. Smooth out bubbles and trim excess fabric with a rotary cutter.
- Secure the Edges. Fold the fabric inside the top and bottom rims. Secure with white duct tape—loose on top, tighter on bottom for a smooth finish.

- Add Drum Ribbon. Hot glue ribbon around both the top and bottom of the tube, leaving a small gap to show the fabric. Overlap and fold ends for a polished look.
- Create Zigzag Cord. Measure 9" intervals and hot glue the jute cord in a zigzag "drum lacing" pattern all around.

- Attach Decorative Studs. Paint wooden half balls gold and hot glue them at the cord intersections for a classic drum look.
