Create this super cute buffalo check Valentine door hanger in just about 30 minutes (not including drying time)!
The Dollar Store is one of the best places to find craft supplies for creating simple and inexpensive projects. You never know what you might find!
They have become one of my go-to places for finding supplies to make Valentine wreaths. I really like how they continue to update their craft section, especially with wood cutouts, twine, and ribbon selections – much of which you’ll use for this door hanger craft.
WHY I LOVE THIS PROJECT
The simplicity of this project makes it one of my favorites. It’s a quick and festive way to decorate for the season of love. If you have a group of crafting friends, this is the perfect craft to gather together and do together.
You can also get extra creative with it by using other Valentine’s Day-related colors like different shades of purple. It doesn’t call for an overabundance of supplies and most of them you may already have in your craft room.

TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE A BUFFALO CHECK VALENTINE DOOR HANGER
Follow these quick step-by-step directions below:
- Remove any rough edges off the wooden pieces with a sanding block.
- Paint the wooden heart plaque white. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.
- Starting in the middle, apply painter’s tape vertically through the center of the heart plaque. Use a small piece of painter’s tape as a spacer and continue applying vertical stripes of painter’s tape out to the right and left edges. Burnish the edges of the tape with a fingernail or bone folder.
- Apply a light coat of light pink craft paint, let dry. Apply a light coat of red craft paint using a dry brush, remove painter’s tape, and let paint dry completely. Don’t worry if your brush strokes show – it adds to the buffalo check effect.
- Starting in the middle, apply painter’s tape horizontally through the center of the heart plaque. Use a small piece of painter’s tape as a spacer and continue applying horizontal stripes of painter’s tape out to the top and bottom edges. Burnish the edges of the tape with a fingernail or bone folder.
- With a small flat paintbrush, apply red craft paint in each square where the light red lines intersect, let dry. Apply a second coat, if necessary. Use the flat edge of the paintbrush to create the edges, and don’t worry about perfection for this step. Let paint dry completely.
- Measure scraps of ribbon, burlap, and lace that are 6” long. Stack in an “X” pattern on top of a 12” natural jute twine. Tie the jute twine tightly in the center of the ribbons, securing with a knot. Fluff ribbons and trim any excess ribbons with scissors.
- Attach wooden love sign to the center of the buffalo check heat with E6000 Adhesive. Adhere the scrappy bow to the top right-hand side of the heart plaque with E6000. Measure and cut a 12” length of natural jute twine and attach to the back of the heart as a hanger with E6000 Adhesive.
How simple was this craft? I’d love to know if you made one for your home and where you decided to hang it.
