DIY yarn Christmas trees

Looking to spruce up your holiday decor with several Christmas trees? Here’s an easy way to do it!

These yarn Christmas trees can compliment any holiday decor theme you have in your home.

I like these trees because they can be up all winter long and accommodate other winter-themed decors like these mini snow globes made in a glass jar. It’s super cute and gives you a lot to work with.

WHY I LOVE THIS PROJECT

Crafting with chunky yarn has always been appealing to me, especially when I want to cut corners on the decorating aspect of the project. In this case, the yarn I chose to use already has a decorative touch to it so there wasn’t anything else extra I needed to do in the end.

A note on my tree form:

You’ll notice that I use scrap cardboard for this project and I promise there is a reason for it. I’ve seen other people use styrofoam cones that you can get in the craft section but I’ve tried to be more environment-friendly, per se. So cutting back on styrofoam to help with this just makes sense; hence, why I chose to use cardboard as my base.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

  • scrap cardboard
  • chunky yarn (textured)
  • scissors
  • wooden dowels
supplies to make yarn Christmas trees
  • hot glue
  • wood beads
  • 1.5″ wood cubes
  • small wood rounds (in various sizes)

TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE YARN CHRISTMAS TREES

Follow this quick video, or read the step-by-step directions below.

  1. Using your heavy duty scissors (crafting shears), cut triangle shapes out of the scrap cardboard piece. Layer 3-4 triangles pieces (descending in size) on top of each other.
  2.  Hot glue the layered triangle pieces together. This will give the tree a 3-D look once wrapped with yarn.
  3. Cut a wooden dowel down to the length you desire and hot glue it to the back of the triangle stack.

  4. Stick the end of a piece of yard alongside the hot glued wooden dowel and begin wrapping**. Wrap at different angles to help give the tree texture.
wrap yard vertically a few time
  5. Alternate wrapping intervals until all of the cardboard is covered.
wrap yarn horizontally at random intervals
  6. When you get to the bottom of the tree, apply a line of hot glue across the bottom and lay the yarn across it, and cut it.
  7. Create the stand by using a dab of hot glue on the 1.5″ cube, then place a wood bead on it, and stick the wooden dowel down into the hole.

** TIP: I personally like to start at the top by applying a small dot of glue and wrapping a few times from top to bottom. Then, I start wrapping horizontally. This will help cover the tip of the tree. A few wrapping ideas are angled from bottom left to top right, bottom right to top left, and so on.

Also, be sure to use the wooden beads to help add stability to the overall stand.

OPTIONAL: Add variation to your tree by adding fringe at the bottom (I did this with the green yarn shown in the tutorial video).

If you’re using yarn without texture, consider hot gluing small wood beads to your tree to add it. It’ll look like little lights or ornaments.
